The Placer County Sheriff's Office is currently accepting applications for Sheriff's Cadet. The Sheriff's Cadet program is a structured mentorship program designed to prepare individuals for a career in law enforcement. Cadets will train with the Sheriff’s Office Youth and Community Services Unit to perform various routine and progressively more difficult non-sworn duties and will have the opportunity to serve the Placer County community alongside Sheriff's Office staff. Cadets will grow their skills and experience in preparation for entry-level law enforcement positions, such as Deputy Sheriff Trainee.

Cadet will be asked to work up to 28 hours over a 7-day period, with the flexibility to choose a schedule between the hours of 0630-2200, Monday to Sunday.

Qualified applicants will undergo an extensive background investigation to determine if they meet the high standards set by the Sheriff's Office in the areas including, but not limited to: high moral character, honesty, and exemplary work ethic. The Sheriff's Office also highly values those with a positive attitude toward fellow workers and the community they will be serving.

This continuous recruitment will remain open for the calendar year, or until the final filing date, whichever occurs first.

Temporary/Extra-help assignments are limited to 28 hours per week with a cap of 999 hours or 960 hours for CalPERS retired annuitants in a fiscal year and are not eligible for benefits.

Applicants should be at least 18 years of age at the time of appointment.

Applications for this recruitment will be screened on a bi-weekly basis.


To learn to perform various routine and progressively more difficult non-sworn law enforcement-related duties; to learn to assist the public, sworn and non-sworn staff, and other personnel with a variety of assignments related to law enforcement functions; and to learn to perform other duties not requiring Peace Officer status.


The Sheriff’s Cadet is an unclassified, training-level classification designed to prepare incumbents for a career in law enforcement through the performance of routine, non-sworn tasks. Positions in this class are distinguished from Deputy Sheriff Trainee in that the latter is a permanent, full-time position requiring incumbents to be enrolled in and attending the California Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Regular Basic Course/Academy.


Receives general supervision from higher-level staff in assigned subject area.


Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Assist with a variety of routine, non-sworn clerical, and technical law enforcement duties.
  • Respond to calls for service; take crime reports, missing person reports, and other reports not requiring the presence of a sworn officer.
  • Assist with collecting evidence and processing crime scenes.
  • Assist the public either in person, on the telephone, or in the field; explain Sheriff’s Office procedures and policies to the public as needed.
  • Respond to abandoned vehicle complaints; conduct parking enforcement; provide traffic control.
  • Set up for and attend community events; advise public of applicable regulations and procedures; represent Sheriff’s Office to the public.
  • Serve as a role player for training scenarios.
  • Conduct meetings and make presentations to community and school groups; write articles; prepare pamphlets and brochures related to law enforcement and crime prevention activities.
  • Perform a variety of record keeping, filing, indexing, and other general clerical work; type statements, letters, petitions, civil and criminal complaints, and other material.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.


Work is typically performed in an indoor office environment with controlled temperature conditions and outdoors in all weather conditions. Duties may be performed in close proximity to moving vehicles, firearms and other weapons, and other environmental factors related to law enforcement field work.

Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.

Required License or Certificate
May need to possess a valid California driver’s license as required by the position. Proof of adequate vehicle insurance and medical clearance may also be required.


Knowledge of:
  • Basic law enforcement terminology and concepts.
  • Modern office procedures, methods, and computer equipment.
  • Correct English usage, spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
  • Basic techniques for dealing with diverse people in emotionally challenging and adverse situations.

Ability to: 
  • On a continuous basis, know and understand all aspects of assigned position; intermittently analyze work papers, reports, and special projects; remember accounts given by witnesses; interpret and apply internal department rules and regulations; observe while in the field; focus on a single task for long periods of time; work with frequent interruptions; work under time pressure and complete a high volume of tasks; and problem solve situations.
  • On an intermittent basis, sit at desk or in a vehicle; walk and stand for long periods of time during field activities; bend, twist, squat, stoop, and kneel to access office and field work equipment; climb stairs and/or ladders; perform simple and power grasping; pushing and pulling; fine manipulation; see with sufficient visual acuity to perform essential job functions; hear with sufficient acuity to perform essential job functions; and lift moderate weight.
  • Learn and apply applicable laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Interpret and explain law enforcement-related policies and procedures to the public.
  • Learn the function, organization, purpose, operation, and procedures of law enforcement and/or public safety agencies.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Effectively communicate with and elicit information from diverse individuals in emotionally challenging or adverse situations.
  • Work with various cultural and ethnic groups in a tactful and effective manner.
  • Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties.


Length of Probation
  • This classification serves at the pleasure of the Appointing Authority and has no specific term and no right to continuous employment.

Prior to the date of hire, applicants must undergo a fingerprint test by the Department of Justice, pass a medical examination (which may include a drug screening and possibly a psychological evaluation), sign a constitutional oath, and submit proof of U.S. citizenship or legal right to remain and work in the U.S.  For some positions, applicants may also be required to submit proof of age, undergo a background investigation (which may include a voice stress analysis and/or a polygraph), and/or be bonded. Additionally, positions in law enforcement classifications and those supporting law enforcement functions will be required to complete a conviction history questionnaire prior to or during the interview process. Applicants for positions with access to Medi-Cal billing software or who are licensed providers must clear the Federal Exclusion List, credentialing, and social security verification. Failure to clear these requirements may result in an employment offer being withdrawn.
