The City of Tucson Parks and Recreation Department is seeking a highly qualified, dedicated, team-oriented

Trade Specialist - Irrigation

to assist with maintaining and repairing equipment at Parks & Recreation facilities.

General Description

The Parks and Recreation Trade Specialist -  Irrigator installs, maintains, and repairs equipment at City facilities, including chlorination systems, and plumbing and irrigation systems. 

This position requires on-call work after-hours, weekends, and holidays for emergencies

Essential Functions

Install, maintain, and repair various types of pipe and tubing; weld PVC and ABS pipe; solder copper pipe; cut, ream, and thread steel pipe; cut and repair concrete, asbestos, clay, ductile or steel pipe

Installs, diagnoses, and repairs drip and sprinkler irrigation systems including emitters, sprinklers, valves, wires, controllers and related equipment

Program, troubleshoot and diagnose all types of controllers including computerized central-based, digital, mechanical, battery, and solar

Install, maintain, and repair low voltage, sensor, and communication wires

Operate light to medium excavating equipment including backhoes, trenchers, loaders, plows and various equipment

Perform blue stake functions including calling in blue stake requests, tracking, marking, and pot-holing lines

Perform related construction duties and maintains necessary records

Ability to utilize computers and electrical control units for the use of automated irrigation systems and electronic work order systems

Ability to communicate effectively with others in various capacities including supervisors, coworkers, and public; both verbally and in writing

Prepare activity reports and orders and maintains inventory of tools, parts, and equipment

Project, plan, and organize repair and maintenance schedule

Provide customer service through researching and responding to questions and concerns from user groups and the general public

This position may require on-call status after-hours, weekends, and holidays work for emergencies

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education Level & Type: High School Diploma or G.E.D.

Minimum Experience Qualifications: At least 2 years of experience in pruning, trimming, transplanting, and treating trees and shrubs, or installing and maintaining irrigation systems, or maintaining and repairing facilities and equipment, or maintaining pools and aquatics equipment.

Valid and Unrestricted Class D - Driver's License

Selection Plan

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be evaluated on the education and work experience in their employment profile and the responses to their supplemental questions. The highest scoring applicants will then be invited to participate in an Oral Board interview.

  • Oral Board Interviews will be held: the week of October 24, 2022

Upon completion of all examination processes, the highest scoring applicants will be placed on the Civil Service Eligibility  List. An applicant's ranking on the Civil Service list will be based on their final score which will be calculated as:

  • 20% of your rating for education and work experience
  • 80% of your oral board interview

Selection Interviews may be conducted post Civil Service Eligibility List by the hiring manager.

This recruitment will establish a Civil Service Eligibility List that will be utilized to fill vacancies occurring within the next 6 months.
