The City of Tucson Planning and Development Services Department is seeking multiple Building Plans Examiners to join our customer-centric culture providing strategic, timely service to an engaged public. The Building Plans Examiner will perform building code plan review of new and existing structures for compliance with the applicable ICC Codes in one or more (combination reviewer) of the following disciplines: Commercial Architectural/Structural, Commercial Mechanical & Plumbing, Commercial Electrical, and Residential.
The Building Plans Examiner will consult with general and specialty contractors, building owners, design professionals and the public in matters related to building construction and applicable code requirements. The Plans Examiner will maintain current knowledge of issues, trends and developments in regulatory standards and building code requirements governing the construction industry and will attend applicable building code training to maintain current International Code Council (ICC) and other certifications as required and have sufficient mobility and physical conditioning to navigate an office environment and occasionally assist with field inspections on construction sites.

The Building Plans Examiner performs technical review of all levels and types of residential and commercial projects. This position requires the incumbent to apply a broad knowledge in the general professional and the specific technical field to the review of construction documents for completeness, accuracy, and conformance to applicable building codes, ordinances, and national standards. This position also provides information to the public, architects, engineers, and contractors at the service counter, in meetings, by email and over the telephone.
Among other responsibilities, a typical work week could require the Building Plans Examiner to
• Perform technical review of building and construction documents and reports for commercial, industrial, and residential projects to ensure compliance with building codes, city ordinances, construction standards, and city amendments.
• Provide customer service and information to engineers, architects, contractors, government officials, utilities representatives and the public in matters relating to construction plans and code requirements.
• Conduct field/site visits when needed; inspect sites to identify potential construction difficulties due to existing items not reflected on construction plans.
• Assist building inspectors with field reviews.
• Participate in the development and/or revision of departmental policies and procedures.
• Consult with architects, engineers, designers, contractors, and homeowners concerning deficiencies with structural and non-structural requirements; explain codes and regulations.
• Research alternate products, materials, and methods of construction for compliance, and make recommendations to the Building Official.
Ensures code compliance by reviewing plans, conducting research, preparing commentary, and consulting with engineers, installers, inspectors and supervisory staff.
Ensures plans are compliant with adopted building codes and applicable ordinances.
Performs calculations, conducts field inspections and consults with outside agencies.
Provides assistance to the public when requested regarding code interpretations, design, product materials, possible violations and other information.
Enters data into the computer.
Minimum Education Level & Type: Bachelor's Degree
Minimum Experience Qualifications: At least 5 years of experience in examining or preparing building plans for structural, life safety, electrical equipment and systems, or mechanical equipment and systems for integrity and compliance with building codes.
An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of this position may be considered.

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be evaluated on the education and work experience in their employment profile and the responses to their supplemental questions. The highest scoring applicants will then be invited to participate in the next phase of the recruitment process.

Upon completion of all examination processes, the highest scoring applicants will be placed on the Civil Service Employment List. An applicant's ranking on the Civil Service list will be based on their final score which will be calculated as:
- 20% of your rating for education and work experience
- 80% of your oral board interviews
This recruitment will establish a civil service list that will be utilized to fill vacancies occurring within the next 6 months.
