The Environmental and General Services Department (EGSD) is seeking a highly qualified, dedicated, dependable, and motivated individual to serve as a Lead Automotive Mechanic. The Lead Automotive Mechanic diagnoses and repairs automotive vehicles at a skilled journey level and provides oversight and guidance to their team members.

General Description

Leads automotive mechanics in repairing, overhauling, adjusting and rebuilding automotive vehicles and equipment, including engines, differentials, standard and automotive transmissions and all other vehicle systems and components, at the skilled journey level.

Essential Functions

This position is for SECOND shift from 1:30 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. with shift differential pay of $1.00/hr for hours worked between 6:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.

This is a lead position affording guidance to other positions performing the same tasks. This lead position also reviews workloads, assigns work and coaches employees with specialized instructions and practices for job accomplishments. Lead personnel may contribute to other employees' performance evaluations, assist with the hiring process by interviewing and making recommendations and providing input to supervisory staff.

Repairs, overhauls, adjusts, and rebuilds automotive vehicles by diagnosing vehicle systems including highly complex electronic controls, parts and components, performing tune-ups and emissions testing and ensuring quality control.

Leads automotive mechanics by scheduling, assigning and prioritizing job repairs, ensuring safety, providing instruction and training to assigned personnel, monitoring repair work in progress and ensuring work conforms to industry standards.

Responds to customer requests and complaints, enters information into the computer, expedites parts, authorizes requisitions, completes work orders and time cards, and prepares reports.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education Level & Type: 6 months post High School

Minimum Experience Qualifications: At least 4 years repairing, overhauling, adjusting, and rebuilding automotive vehicles, at the skilled journey level

Valid and Unrestricted Class D - Driver's License

Special Job Requirements

This position requires the following certifications within 60 days of hire:

  • State of Arizona Emissions Inspector Certification
  • Forklift Operator Certification
  • Mobile Air Conditioning Society (MACS) Certification or equivalent

Failure to obtain certifications will result in the removal of the conditional selection offer.

Panel Board Interviews will be held: Thursday, March 2, 2023

Upon completion of all examination processes, the highest scoring applicants will be placed on an Eligibility List. An applicant's ranking on the list will be based on their final score which will be calculated as:

  • 10% of your rating for education and work experience
  • 90% of your Virtual panel board interview

Hiring interviews may be conducted.
