PARKS AREA SUPERVISOR

with strong leadership skills to join the Parks Maintenance Team.

General Description

The Parks Area Supervisor supervises oversees the operation, maintenance, and improvement of parks, and various park facilities through the supervision of City employees including one or more Parks Maintenance Coordinators, Trade Specialist, Groundskeepers, and several General Maintenance Workers.

Essential Functions

Supervises employees involved in the maintenance and recreational services associated with park facilities within an urban and suburban environment

Utilizes  appropriate staffing and effectiveness by participating in the recruitment and hiring of employees, making recommendations on employee discipline, and other human resource issues, evaluating and managing employee performance, discussing and identifying personnel issues and facilitating resolutions, promoting positive morale in the unit, ensuring staff is trained appropriately for maximum performance, and providing leadership and guidance

Inspects parks and park facilities to ensure proper operation, care and maintenance of property, and making recommendations regarding needed improvements or measures necessary to protect assets and natural resources 

Assists with the implementation, evaluation and interpretation of department policies, projects and procedures and ensures that unit work conforms to local, state, and federal governmental regulations, and other applicable rules and requirements

Manages, coordinates, and determines priorities of work load, monitoring levels of resources, establishing time lines, assigning work, monitoring progress, recommending changes and suggestions, writing, reviewing and editing reports prepared by staff, and approving completed projects and reports

 Works with appropriate personnel in other sections and departments and outside contractors regarding the maintenance and development of park property, water systems, roadways or other facilities

Keeps records and prepares written reports for personnel matters, job cost estimates, budget information and risk management matters

Works with neighborhood and community groups on matters of civic and park related interests

Contributes to the needs of the community and City by responding and causing others to respond to requests, conducting research, providing solutions and correcting errors as a means to achieve the organization's values and goals

Implementing and causing others to implement the organization's values and strategies by leading through example, competency, and accountability

Regularly works more than forty hours in a workweek without additional compensation to perform assigned job duties, including weekends, evenings, early morning hours, and holidays as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education Level & Type: 6 months post High School

Minimum Experience Qualifications: At least 5 years of lead or supervisory experience in landscaping or turf maintenance

"Lead" is defined as leading at least one (1) full-time FTE in a work unit.  It does not include leading projects, departments, contractors, interns, etc.

"Supervisory" is defined as having supervised at least one (1) full-time FTE.

Valid and unrestricted Class D - Driver's License

Special Job Requirements

Structural Pest Control Commission Applicator License and Certified Playground Safety Inspector Certification required before the end of the probationary period

Selection Plan

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be evaluated on the education and work experience in their employment profile and the responses to their supplemental questions. The highest scoring applicants will then be invited to participate in an Oral Board interview and Written Exam.

  • Written Exam and Oral Board Interviews will be held: the week of January 10, 2022

Upon completion of all examination processes, the highest scoring applicants will be placed on the Civil Service Employment List.  An applicant's ranking on the Civil Service Employment List will be based on their final score which will be calculated as:

  • 10% of your rating for education and work experience
  • 15% of your written exam 
  • 75% of your oral board interview

Selection Interviews may be conducted post Civil Service Employment List by the Hiring Manager.

This recruitment will establish a Civil Service Employment List that may be utilized to fill vacancies occurring at Parks and Recreation within the next 6 months.

Veterans, Native American, or Disability preference points will be added to the final score for those that are placed on the Civil Service Employment List.  If you qualify for preference points as outlined in the Employment Profile, you must present your documentation at the Oral Board interviews.  The DD 214 must be a copy that indicates characterization of service.
