The Eligibility List may be used fill vacancies occurring at Tucson Water in the next 6 months. Selection will be made in accordance with CSR III, Section 2. The list of employees eligible for consideration will remain in effect for 6 months. Examination results and current status will be communicated by email.


The Water Quality and Operations Division of Tucson Water Department is seeking to fill several vacancies for Water Quality Analyst in the following areas:

Water Quality Analyst – Technical Support and Development
The Water Quality Analyst position for the Technical Support and Development program within Tucson Water will work closely with customers on Water Quality concerns and water pressure issues. The position includes responding to and resolving customer complaints and concerns by e-mail, telephone and on-site visits; as well as researching information, performing field investigations, collecting and analyzing water samples.

Water Quality Analyst – Lab
The Water Quality Analyst position for the Water Quality Lab within Tucson Water will work in a field and lab environment. The position includes collecting and analyzing water samples. The WQ Analyst will calibrate instruments, prepare required reagents, perform testing and quality control, data entry and review, sample receiving and login, and scheduling.

General Description

Samples potable and non-potable water for compliance with standards and regulations. Analyzes and reports results of tests, and responds to and resolves customer complaints.

Essential Functions

Collects, analyzes and reviews water samples by generating work lists, developing sampling plans, prioritizing and scheduling tests, calibrating instruments, preparing required reagents, performing testing and quality control, entering data into the computer system and reviewing data for completeness and accuracy.

Receives and maintains samples by picking up containers of bottles, checking the completeness of samples and paperwork, preparing and shelving bottles and bottle sets, delivering samples and paperwork, washing and preserving testing equipment and sampling containers, preparing solutions and disposing of wastes.

Assists in project and program management by communicating and identifying client needs, scheduling projects and sampling events, disseminating information to personnel, maintaining and developing program spreadsheets and documentation and coordinating activities with other sections and divisions.

Responds to and resolves customer complaints and concerns by communicating with customers, performing field investigations, retrieving data, researching information, logging complaints, producing reports from information gathered and providing data for the website, reports and to customers.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education Level & Type: Associate Degree

Minimum Experience Qualifications: At least 1 year of sampling, data collection, and analyzing in the field of water, environmental health, life science, and/or physical science

Valid and Unrestricted Class D - Driver's License

An equivalent combination of education and relevant-level experience that provides the ability to successfully perform the essential functions may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications

The ideal candidates will possess the above minimum qualifications as well as relevant experience in the areas listed below:

  • Sampling potable and non-potable water
  • Analyzing and reporting results related to water quality
  • Using lab equipment and quality control procedures related to potable and non-potable, and wastewater
  • Maintaining records and preparing communication
  • Customer service experience related to water quality
  • Utilizing an Asset Management System

Selection Plan

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be evaluated on the education and work experience in their employment profile and the responses to their supplemental questions. The highest scoring applicants will then be invited to participate in a Virtual Oral Board Interview.

  • Virtual Oral Board interviews will be held March 9, 2021

Upon completion of all examination processes, the highest scoring applicants will be placed on an Eligibility List. An applicant's ranking on the list will be based on their final score which will be calculated as: 

  • 10% of your rating for education and work experience 
  •  90% of your rating for panel board interview

This recruitment will establish a Civil Service Employment List that will be utilized to fill all vacancies occurring at Tucson Water within the next 6 months. Selection interviews with the hiring authority may be conducted post-list.
