The Source Water Division of the Tucson Water Planning & Engineering Division seeks an Engineering Associate to collect groundwater samples and related field data according to regulatory requirements and Tucson Water standards. Groundwater level and quality data collected will support compliance with Tucson Water’s regulatory permits and new permit requests. Careful, precise, accurate, and complete data collection, recording and reporting protocols must be followed.
This position is also required to install and repair data collection instruments and will conduct groundwater well inspections and repairs as needed. The Engineering Associate will cultivate a good working relationship with co-workers, hydrologists, public agencies, and consultants and may be required to oversee contractors during well installation, sampling, and repair.
This position is approximately 80% field work. Office work will include filing and data entry tasks as needed. Field work may be conducted in populated areas and the Engineering Associate is expected to interact with the public in a professional manner. Field work may also occur in remote areas under hot, dusty, or windy conditions.

The essential duties include but are not limited to:
• Collects water quality samples and water level measurements for discretionary studies and to maintain compliance with Underground Storage Facility Permits, Aquifer Protection Permits, the Tucson Airport Remediation Project, and various other State and Federal regulations.
• Coordinates with contractors, developers, public agencies, and technical support staff by reviewing drawings and plans, attending meetings and conducting field inspections.
• Maintains project budgets and schedules, tracks and reviews billings, and prepares site work logs.
• Reviews plans and reports by researching plats, plans, statements, reports, and contracts for regulation compliance; verifies data and calculations, identifies, and resolves conflicts as needed.
• Communicates effectively, both orally and in writing with professional, technical, and management personnel, and the public as a representative of the City.
• Provides technical expertise for the design and set up of specialized field monitoring instrumentation and equipment.
• Provides for the organization, operation, and maintenance of the Hydrology Field Lab Facility and equipment. Develops and updates Standard Operating Procedures related to instrumentation, groundwater sampling and other tasks.
• Compiles and interprets water quality and water level data.
• Monitors and collects data for well drilling, well development, and well rehabilitation activities to insure contract compliance. Provides guidance and organizes drilling and development activities as needed.
• Collects and processes soil cuttings to produce detailed geologic logs for production and monitor wells.
• Occasionally guides or advises the work of Source Water field staff. Coordinates assigned staff and their projects ensuring timely and quality activities for the benefit of the section, division, department, City, and the community. Maintains files, receives and sends correspondence, reviews requests, creates and maintains models and maps; compiles and analyzes data, provides information regarding policies, procedures, rules, regulations, and codes.
• Utilizes computer programs and sophisticated computer methods and technology to aid in project analysis, development, and implementation. This requires the use of a field-hardened computer in a field setting to monitor and update collection procedures and modification of complex data collection programs.
Minimum Education Level & Type: Associate Degree
Minimum Experience Qualifications: At least 2 years in engineering
An equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the ability to successfully perform the essential functions may be considered.
