Introduction

The Tucson Water Department is seeking experienced Well Maintenance Mechanics to perform skilled mechanical repairs and maintenance on wells, deep well pumps, and related equipment. Duties require working outdoors under varying weather conditions, in constrictive and/or slippery areas and around moving equipment. Work is subject to stand-by and call-out during off duty hours, and the ability to lift and carry materials and equipment weighing 60 pounds.

General Description

Performs general repairs and maintenance to wells, deep well pumps and related equipment as well as monitors water levels and pumping pressures.

Essential Functions

Examples of essential duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Removes and installs well pumps and related equipment. Assists in the operation of well pump rigs and cranes with capacities up to 100,000 lbs.
  • Prepares pumps and pump rigs and pump materials for installation.
  • Disassembles and performs routine maintenance on pumps, valves, well pump inner columns, well pump discharges, and similar equipment; cleans and checks parts for wear and damage, and reassembles units in accordance with manufacturer instructions. 
  • Measures water levels, rates, and pressures by using sounders and timing flow meters. Performs calculations with respect to gallon output, time revolutions of electric meters and wattage used. Enters data into a computer system, determines well capacity and efficiency, and completes reports.
  • Loads, hauls, unloads, and sets for installation well pump materials, tractor trailers, service truck mounted cranes, overhead cranes, and other large cranes.
  • Participates in the construction of concrete foundations and mounting pads for wells, pumps, and related equipment and facilities; builds forms for foundations; excavates holes or trenches as needed.
  • Assists in fabrication of parts and equipment including mounts, brackets, and shields using arc weld and Oxy-Acetylene cutting torch.
  • Operates large cranes, truck-mounted cranes, overhead cranes, hoists, jackhammers, concrete mixers, air compressors, pneumatic equipment, and related equipment.
  • Uses large and heavy hand tools such as 48 inch wrenches and 12 lb. hammers. Picks up, carries, and positions by hand, equipment weighing up to 60 lbs.
  • Drives well pump rigs, tank trucks, and trailer tractors hauling equipment.
  • Modifies sites as necessary to perform well and well pump work; installs and removes temporary fencing and gates as needed; installs and maintains protective barriers for unfenced monitor wells.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education Level & Type: High School Diploma or G.E.D.

Minimum Experience Qualifications: At least 1 year in well maintenance and repair

Valid and Unrestricted CDL - Class A Commercial Driver's License with a tanker endorsement required at the time of application

CDL permit acceptable for up to 60 days from date of hire

Pursuant to Administrative Directive 6.01-8 Commercial Driver Policy: Incumbent employees may apply for a promotional opportunity if they meet all of the position requirements except for a CDL or required CDL endorsement. An employee who does not have the required license may be conditionally selected, and advised of the requirement that they obtain the required license within 60 calendar days of the conditional notification of selection.

Candidates applying for positions carrying a CDL driving designation are required to possess a CDL permit at the time of application, and must obtain a valid Arizona CDL within 60 days of hire. The CDL must be of the appropriate classification, with endorsements as required by the job. Failure to obtain the required CDL and endorsement will result in failure of probation. Failure to maintain the CDL thereafter will result in disciplinary action up to and including termination.

Special Job Requirements

Required within 12 months of hire:

  • ADEQ Grade 1 certification in Water Distribution

The certification is required within 12-months of hire. Failure to obtain the certification will result in failure of probation and employment will be terminated effective immediately.

Applicants with water certifications from other states will be accepted only if the certification is eligible for reciprocity. However, applicants are required to check with the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) regarding reciprocity eligibility/requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

The ideal candidates will possess the above minimum qualifications as well as relevant experience in the areas listed below:

  • Over two years of experience in the maintenance, repair, and installation of water system equipment with emphasis on well pump and motor maintenance
  • Completion of technical school or related technical training in the mechanical trades

Selection Plan

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be evaluated on the education and work experience in their employment profile and the responses to their supplemental questions. The highest scoring applicants will then be invited to participate in an Oral Board interview.   

  • Oral Board Interviews will be held: January 30, 2019

Upon completion of all examination processes, the highest scoring applicants will be placed on the Civil Service Employment List.  An applicant's ranking on the Civil Service list will be based on their final score which will be calculated as:      

  • 10% of your rating for education and work experience
  • 90% of your oral board interview   

This recruitment will establish a civil service list that may be utilized to fill vacancies occurring within the next 6 months.
