The City of Tucson is seeking to fill multiple vacancies in the Survey Instrument Technician classification in both the Transportation and Water departments.
Positions within the Department of Transportation:
Perform technical survey engineering work as a member of a survey crew. Survey Instrument Technicians obtain measurement data by operating various mechanical, optical and electronic survey instruments and devices. They will be called on to operate transits, levels, theodolites or electronic measuring devices and GPSs to establish the location of lines and points. On occasion, the Survey Instrument Technician may act as Survey Party Chief in their absence.
Positions within Tucson Water:
Perform technical land survey work involved in preliminary, topographic, and construction field engineering surveys required for property and right-of-way determinations, and for establishing and maintaining benchmarks and monuments
Occasionally directs helpers, assistants, seasonal employees, interns, volunteers or temporary employees and may temporarily act in a higher capacity.
Conducts surveys by setting up and operating survey instrumentation, making observations, preparing notes of topographical features, as-built plans, and related information, interpreting maps and specifications, and performing calculations.
Provides assistance to personnel by clearing survey areas, locating markers, setting pins, hubs, benchmarks, and staking pins.
Generates computer aided drawings, maintains equipment, conducts research, and provides assistance with calculations and field book entry.
Minimum Education Level & Type: 6 months post High School
Minimum Experience Qualifications: At least 1 year conducting land surveys
An equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of this position may be considered.
Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be evaluated on the education and work experience in their employment profile and the responses to their supplemental questions. The highest scoring applicants will then be invited to participate in an Oral Board Interview.
Oral Board Interviews will be held the week of June 25, 2018.
Upon completion of all examination processes, the highest scoring applicants will be placed on an Eligibility List. An applicant's ranking on the list will be based on their final score which will be calculated as:

Conclusion This position requires a satisfactory Criminal Background Check and Motor Vehicle History Report. Reference checks may also be conducted prior to an offer of employment. Employment offers are contingent upon successfully passing any of the above requirements.
The following information pertains to driving requirements for this classification with the City of Tucson. Under "Driving Level" None, Secondary or Primary, refers to the driving responsibility as it relates to the essential functions of the classification. License Type, is just that, the type of Arizona Driving License required for the classification. If the position requires a Commercial Drivers License (CDL), the endorsements will be listed under "Endorsements." Under Safety Sensitive a "Yes" means employees with this classification are subject to pre-employment and random drug testing. License Type A,B,C,D,or M may require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage. Exceptions to classification driving requirement's may exist based on position.
