The Apprentice position will receive on-the-job training in the areas of testing, repairing, calibrating, and installing residential and commercial water meters and related equipment.
Testing, disassembling, repairing and calibrating water meters for potable, reclaim, and construction water use.
Utilizing in-house bench tests to test meters for accuracy.
Maintaining, testing and repairing backflow equipment.
Calibrating and repairing city-owned and private construction water meters to meet AWWA specifications.
Performs shop maintenance by maintaining interior and exterior of shop.
Complying with ADEQ regulations in maintaining the neutralizing tank by removing waste, replacing filters and disposing of hazardous waste.
Processing appropriate paperwork and maintaining equipment and tools.
The Apprentice Water Meter Repairer will not routinely perform the following functions from the base classification:
Field Work - Meter testing, programming and data logging functions on technologically advanced large meters (3" and above) with electronic registers will not be routinely performed by the Apprentice classification.
Shop Work - Testing electronic registers with Itron handheld for meter sizes 5/8" - 2" will not be routinely performed by the Apprentice classification.
Minimum Education Level & Type: High School Diploma or G.E.D.
Minimum Experience Qualifications: At least 1 year meter maintenance experience. Meter maintenance is defined as:
Read meters
Test meter for stuck
Replace/install meters
Repair leaks at meter (couplings, etc.)
High bill investigations
Valid and Unrestricted Class D - Driver's License

The following information pertains to driving requirements for this classification with the City of Tucson. Under "Driving Level" None, Secondary or Primary, refers to the driving responsibility as it relates to the essential functions of the classification. License Type, is just that, the type of Arizona Driving License required for the classification. If the position requires a Commercial Drivers License (CDL), the endorsements will be listed under "Endorsements." Under Safety Sensitive a "Yes" means employees with this classification are subject to pre-employment and random drug testing. License Type A,B,C,D,or M may require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage. Exceptions to classification driving requirement's may exist based on position.
