Under general direction, responsible for all functions of the medical library, performs complex medical librarian work; and provides research and reference support to the residency programs or other work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
An incumbent of this position is responsible for all functions of the medical library; coordinates activities related to the residency programs, and supports hospital staff by providing complex medical research and reference. The Medical Research Librarian is distinguished from the Medical Librarian in that it requires an incumbent to possess a master’s degree in library science or a closely related field and professional librarian experience in a medical or health sciences library.
TYPICAL DUTIES
Plans, directs, and coordinates the services and activities of the medical library; develops and implements library policies, procedures and resource guides.
Identifies appropriate reference materials, performs authoritative and in-depth literature searches; gathers medical research from various databases as requested by physicians, residents, and other hospital staff.
Reviews and edits clinical research studies; assists the residents and other medical staff on creating computer assisted media, photographic, and biomedical images for research publications.
Under direction of the Graduate Medical Education Committee, plans, organizes, and coordinates all aspects of the annual research day and/or other related scholarly activities.
Prepares various Institutional Review Board (IRB) documents; organizes and performs administrative and clerical tasks in support of IRB meetings and activities; updates IRB policies and procedures in accordance with oversight agency regulations such as the Office of Human Research Protections.
Assists in the acquisition of medical reference books, reports, journals, audio visual materials, and other library materials; orders, catalogues, maintains, and processes books and periodicals, including electronic or computer assisted media.
Monitors and makes recommendations concerning the medical library budget; assists in determining how funds will be allocated.
Processes interlibrary loan requests online; searches and maintains database of journal titles; maintains record of interlibrary loans requested and received.
Develops and maintains a system for scheduling didactic sessions, computer training sessions, in service training exams, board review exams, and conducts program review survey as required by Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.
Monitors physical inventories of books and other property; maintains pamphlets and clipping files; purges outdated volumes and other materials; sorts, selects, and orders commercial bindings for periodicals.
May provide technical and/or administrative supervision to medical or library staff as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Graduation from an accredited college of university with a master’s degree in library science or a closely related field.
Experience: Two years of professional librarian experience in a medical or health science library.
KNOWLEDGE
Modern medical and/or health library administration, budgeting and inventory techniques; methods and procedures associated with modern medical library programs, including those related to electronic cataloguing systems; health professionals’ information needs; federal regulations related to IRB and human subject research subjects, Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education program guidelines, computer assisted multi-media presentation programs and equipment; advanced computer technology and software programs relevant to department operations; medical terminology; event planning, and fundamentals of written composition and editing.
ABILITY
Initiate and implement library policies and procedures; compile and write reports; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; prepare and make presentations for both small and large groups; evaluate and acquire new materials such medical journals; maintain a modern medical library; perform research and cataloguing; operate computer assisted media equipment and programs; operate advanced computer and office technology, including pertinent software; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, medical staff and the public; work independently.
