DEFINITION

Under immediate supervision, learns to perform diagnostic and therapeutic occupational therapy techniques for a variety of disabling conditions in preparation for taking the National Board of Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) examination.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

This is a temporary limited permit class in the Occupational Therapist series. An incumbent in this class learns to perform a variety of occupational therapy services, including assessment, planning, treatment, related documentation, and communication. Incumbents work under the immediate supervision of a licensed Occupational Therapist.

TYPICAL DUTIES

  • Performs occupational therapy evaluations and interprets findings.
  • Plans and implements occupational therapeutic treatments for patients; establishes appropriate treatment goals; uses equipment properly.
  • Coordinates treatment programs with physicians, nurses, professional and para-professional staff.
  • Maintains accurate records and prepares written reports.
  • Attends staff meetings and patient conferences; participates in in-service and staff development classes.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Special Requirement: Possess an Occupational Therapist-limited permit issued by the California Board of Occupational Therapy. Incumbents must successfully pass the National Board of Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) examination within four (4) months of receiving an Occupational Therapist limited permit status. 

KNOWLEDGE

Current occupational therapy theory, practices, applications, and processes; human anatomy and physiology related to treatments; basic principles of psychology and psychopathology; perceptual-motor theory and principles; medical terminology; basic medical record keeping.

ABILITY

Organize and implement occupational therapy treatment programs; conduct individual and group treatment programs; interpret and adapt physician orders and/or written reports; evaluate patient progress; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; provide guidance and therapy instructions to patients; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with patients, families, staff and others; maintain excellent customer relations; utilize computers and office automation equipment; prepare reports; complete accurate medical records and/or charts.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Mobility-Operation of a data entry device; frequent standing for long periods; constant walking; occasional pushing/pulling; occasional bending/squatting; Lifting-Occasional lifting of 50 lbs. or more, restraining, lifting/turning people; Vision-Frequent color perception; occasional eye/hand coordination, peripheral vision and depth perception; frequent reading; Dexterity-Occasional holding and repetitive motion; frequent reaching, grasping and writing; Hearing/Talking-Constant hearing normal speech, talking in person, talking on the telephone; frequent hearing on the telephone and hearing faint sounds; Special Requirements-May require occasional overtime; may require weekend or evening work; Emotional/Psychological-Occasional emergency situations; occasional exposure to trauma, grief and death; frequent public contact and decision making; frequent concentration required; Environmental-Occasional exposure to noise; may be exposed to varied weather conditions.
