Security Officer II (#RP0402)
DEFINITIONUnder general supervision, leads and participates in routine security patrol work of a unit of security officers in providing for the safety and protection of patients, employees, visitors, medical staff, and the facilities and grounds operated by the Department of Health Care Services; performs the more complex work of the unit; and does related or other work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Section 3 of the Civil service Rules.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICSAn employee in this class is distinguished as a lead worker and performs the most difficult security assignments by referring to established security policies and procedures. Incumbents may assist in training lower level security officers. Incumbents must possess the ability to relate positively with persons from differing ethnic, economic, and social backgrounds by maintaining a courteous and helpful attitude when dealing with the public and staff.
TYPICAL DUTIES
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSEITHERN PATTERN I
Experience: One year as a Security Officer I or Security Worker in San Joaquin County.
Education: Completion of a POST certified PC 832 course, Module A & B.
OR PATTERN II
Experience: Two (2) years in law enforcement, security guard work or military service.
Education: Completion of a POST certified PC 832 course, Module A & B.
OR PATTERN III
Experience: Six (6) months experience in law enforcement, security guard work or military service.
Education: (1) Completion of a POST Certified Basic Peace Officer Training Academy (Level I Reserve Course); or (2) Completion of 60 semester units at an accredited college or university at least 12 semester units in criminal justice, police administration, social or behavioral sciences or business administration.

License: Possession of a valid California Class C driver’s license.
KNOWLEDGEBasic principles of supervision and security systems; operation of a two-way radio communications system; buildings and grounds security procedures, building safety; personal safety; fire protection procedures; basic public relations; applicable codes and regulations; departmental policies and procedures pertaining to security activities; professional ethics; officer safety.
ABILITYPlan and organize the work of others; operate a personal computer; perform simple arithmetic calculations; conduct cost analysis; prepare and implement budgets and fiscal controls; understand and follow written and oral instructions; perform routine security tasks; communicate effectively; prepare written reports; establish and maintain effective working relationships; work varied shifts; physically restrain patients/visitors; keep calm under stress or emergency situations, make independent judgment and adopt quick, effective, and responsible course of action, and be honest and tactful in both pleasant and unpleasant situations; function as a liaison between Department of Health Care Services facilities and local law enforcement agencies; perform essential physical requirements including, but not limited to: the ability to stand and/or walk for an entire shift, climb six (6) or more flights of stairs, lift and carry twenty-five (25) pounds, perform manual dexterity tasks, withstand frequent exposure to weather, and restrain, kneel, bend, and stoop frequently.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTSMobility-Frequent sitting, walking, pushing/pulling, bending/squatting and stair climbing; occasional standing for long periods; Lifting-Occasional lifting of over 70 pounds, restraining, lifting, turning of heavy objects or people; Vision-Constant use of overall vision; frequent need for hand-eye coordination and depth perception; occasional reading and close-up work, field of vision/peripheral and color perception; Dexterity-Normal dexterity, frequent writing and grasping; occasional holding and reaching; Hearing/Talking-Frequent hearing and talking on the telephone and in person; Emotional/Psychological-Frequent concentration; occasional public contact and decision making; Environmental Conditions-Constant working weekend/nights or evenings.
