DEFINITION

Under general supervision, performs nutritional education and assistance for individuals and groups qualified in the Public Health WIC Program; performs technical and administrative support services; and does related or other work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

This is the certified level in the WIC Nutrition Assistant series.  Incumbents work independently to determine eligibility of clients and educate clients on a variety of nutritional and health related issues. Incumbents in this class must be certified as a WIC Nutrition Assistant by the State of California Department of Health Services WIC Supplemental Nutrition Branch. 

TYPICAL DUTIES

  • Reviews referral forms and supporting documents to determine eligibility; determines if clients and dependents are eligible for aid; completes income and residence screening. 
  • Prepares food instruments for eligible clients; orients clients to the program. 
  • Obtains client health and nutritional history; records observations and discussions of basic health conditions; determines nutritional risk; develops a nutritional care plan. 
  • Counsels and provides information on health related topics which may include anemia, lead poisoning prevention, food safety, breastfeeding, and nutrition; provides community referrals as necessary. 
  • Plans and presents nutrition education classes to WIC clients; participates in outreach activities in the community; participates in in-service training. 
  • Reviews and gathers information and reports; maintains appropriate records and files; accurately enters or updates client information in database; researches client information.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience:  Six months of experience equivalent to a WIC Nutrition Assistant I in San Joaquin County.  

Certificate:  Possession of a valid certificate for a WIC Nutrition Assistant issued by the State of California Department of Health Services WIC Supplemental Nutrition Branch.  

License:  Possession of a valid California driver’s license if required by nature of assignment.

KNOWLEDGE

Methods and techniques of individual and group counseling; basic nutrition including food groups, nutrients, dietary needs, food preparation; WIC foods and food instruments; WIC program requirements; available community services; office practices and procedures; filing and record keeping systems; basic computer and modern office automation technology and computer software programs relevant to department operations; community and government services and resources; basic arithmetic.

ABILITY

Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with staff, the general public, and with culturally diverse and economically disadvantaged clients; understand and follow oral and written instructions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, clients, community agencies and the public; maintain records; perform basic arithmetical operations; operate computers, office equipment and related software; establish and maintain effective customer service.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Mobility-Frequent operation of a data entry device, repetitive motion, sitting for long periods, walking; occasional standing, pushing, pulling, bending, squatting; Lifting-Frequently 5 pounds or less; occasionally 5 to 30 pounds; Visual-Constant good overall vision and reading/close-up work; frequent color perception and use of eye/hand coordination; occasional use of depth perception and peripheral vision; Hearing/Talking-Frequent hearing of normal speech, hearing/talking on the telephone and in person; Emotional/Psychological-Constant public contact; Special Requirements-May require working weekends, nights, and/or occasional overtime; Environmental-Occasional exposure to varied weather conditions.
