$35.87-$43.60 Hourly / $6,217.88-$7,557.88 Monthly / $74,614.64-$90,694.57 Yearly

Under immediate supervision, performs diagnostic and therapeutic speech pathology techniques for a variety of disabling conditions; and does other or related work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules.

This is the entry-level licensed class in the Speech Therapist series. Incumbents perform a variety of speech therapy services including assessment, planning, treatment, related documentation and communication. Initially, incumbents work under immediate supervision, but as experience is gained, they may exercise more latitude and judgment and may be assigned to mentor less experienced therapists and/or students.

• Performs speech therapy evaluations and interprets findings.
• Plans and implements all types of therapeutic treatment for patients; establishes appropriate treatment goals; uses equipment properly.
• Coordinates treatment programs with physicians, nurses, professional and para-professional staff.
• Attends staff meetings and patient conferences; participates in in-service and staff development classes.
• Maintains accurate records and written reports.
• May mentor less experienced speech therapists and/or student interns.

Licenses and Certificates:  1) Current licensure as a Speech Pathologist issued by the California Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology and Hearing Aid Dispensers’ Board; and 2) possession of a Certificate of Clinical Competency in Speech Pathology issued by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.

Knowledge of:  Current principles, methods, techniques, equipment and materials used in speech therapy, possible reactions of and hazards to patients during treatment, and of precautionary and remedial measure; anatomy and physiology related to treatment; psychological and physiological problems of persons with disabling conditions.

Ability to:  Organize and implement speech therapy treatment programs; conduct individual and group treatment programs; interpret and adapt physician’s orders and/or written reports; communicate effectively; work independently; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with patients, families, staff and others; maintain excellent customer relations.
