DEFINITION

Under general supervision, uses specialized equipment to perform diagnostic tests and does related or other work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

This is the journey person level class in the Special Procedures Technician series.  An employee in this class is responsible for operating equipment to perform the full range of tests of cardiac and cephalic activity.*

This class differs from that of Special Procedures Technician I in that employees of the latter do not perform the full range of test* at journey person level.  This class differs from that of Cardiopulmonary Technologist in that employees in that class perform more complex tests requiring knowledge and abilities specific to cardiopulmonary tests.

*The following list comprises the full range of specialized procedures performed at the present time.  As hospital needs change, specific tests requiring similar skills may be added.

TYPICAL DUTIES

  • Performs a full range of specialized procedures* such as phonocardiograms, echoencephalograms, stress tests, cardiac catheterizations and others; operates and monitors equipment; observes patients, noting vital signs and reactions; records data.
  • Sets up equipment for tests; lays out supplies and instruments; provides sterile field for invasive tests.
  • Explains procedure to patient; monitors patient during procedure; notifies physician if patient shows signs of distress; initiates appropriate action to maintain patient or correct distress.
  • Administers medication as ordered by physician.
  • Disassembles, cleans and reassembles all equipment; makes minor repairs, replaces defective parts.
  • Mounts and labels records of procedures; Xerox's copies; routes to physician for review and interpretation; maintains file of reports.
  • Maintains inventory of supplies; orders as needed.
  • May train Special Procedures Technician I in the performance of any of the specialized procedures.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience:  One-year equivalent to Special Procedures Technician I in San Joaquin County and completion of training in performance of all of the specialized procedures.*

LicensePossession of a valid license as a Licensed Vocational Nurse issued by the Board of Vocational Nurse and Psychiatric Technician Examiners, State of California.

KNOWLEDGE

Procedures and equipment used to perform a full range of tests of cardiac and cephalic activity; use and maintenance of specialized equipment; basic anatomy and physiology; symptoms of seizures, cardiac distress and normal vital signs; sterile techniques; resuscitation techniques; basic filing systems.

ABILITY

Establish and maintain a sterile field; administer medication; explain technical procedures to patients; deal with patients sympathetically and tactfully; record information; perform accurately and quickly in stressful situations; follow verbal instructions; train other personnel in the performance of specialized procedures; perform all specialized procedures.*
