DEFINITION

Under general supervision, performs skilled traffic control device installation and maintenance work; and does related or other work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section of the Civil Service Rules.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

This is a second level class in the Maintenance Worker series assigned to the Traffic division of the Department of Public Works. Employees in this class perform skilled work in the installation and maintenance of traffic maintenance control devices.

TYPICAL DUTIES

  • Installs and maintains traffic signs, pavement legends and symbols, roadway center and edgelines, and reflective pavement markers.
  • Fabricates simple traffic signs.
  • Operates pavement paint removal equipment, trailer mounted hold digger, hand propelled line striper, sign sild screen machine, airless spray equipment, and assists in the operations of large truck-operated centerline paint striper.
  • Installs construction signs and barricades; serves as flagman for construction and maintenance operations.
  • Maintains and repairs assigned vehicles and equipment.
  • Maintains accurate written records of work completed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EITHER I

Experience:  One year as a Maintenance Worker in the Public Works Department of San Joaquin County.

OR II

Experience:  Two years commercial painting experience.

AND

License Possession of valid California driver’s license.

KNOWLEDGE

Basic traffic control devices, their functions and maintenance procedures for; basic materials, methods, and techniques in assembling simple traffic signs; basic materials and methods and techniques of painted pavement legends and raised reflective markers; basic traffic control standards; operation and maintenance and repair of airless painting equipment; rules and regulations governing the operation of motor vehicles; operation of hand and power tools; County, State and Federal rules and regulations pertaining to traffic control devices and situations.

ABILITY

Follow oral and written instruction, perform work assignments with minimal supervision, operate traffic control device installation and maintenance and maintain equipment.
