CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
Chief District Attorney Investigator is a· single position class exempt from Civil Service.
The incumbent is responsible for planning, coordinating and managing the activities of the
investigation bureau the District Attorney's Office.
The District Attorney Investigator series differs from that of other investigator series in that
employees of the former are statutory full-time peace officers and have a duty to act upon criminal
violations occurring in their presence. Employees are peace officers as defined by Section 830.1
of the Penal Code.
TYPICAL DUTIES

Plans, organizes and directs the investigative activities of the District Attorney's Office.
Consults and confers with department management staff in the formulation of investigative plans, policies and procedures.
Reviews and evaluates reports on cases investigated; insures that complete investigations are submitted; advises the District Attorney as to course of action to be taken.
Coordinates the investigative activities of the District Attorney's Office with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies; establishes liaison with other public agencies.
Enforces all criminal and civil laws falling within the scope and jurisdiction of the District Attorney in the prescribed conduct of the office.
Selects and trains investigative staff; prepares supervisory employee performance evaluations; recommends disciplinary action, promotions, transfers, and merit increases.
Directs the compilation and maintenance of records; prepares reports and correspondence.
Conducts or participates in meetings and conferences as a representative of the District Attorney's Office.
Ensures attorneys are assisted in their preparation and presentation of evidence for court; may testify in court.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Experience: Six years of sworn investigative experience performing felony investigations in an investigative unit of a California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (CA P.O.S.T.) certified law enforcement agency. A minimum of four years supervising sworn personnel at a CA P.O.S.T. certified law enforcement agency.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
License: Possession of a valid California driver’s license.
Special Requirements:
1) Must possess valid Supervisory CA P.O.S.T. Certificate;
2) Must meet and maintain minimum standards required for Peace Officers as set forth in Sections 1029 and 1031 of California Government Code;
3) Must pass a background investigation conducted by the San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office; and
4) Must meet the physical standards established for the class.
KNOWLEDGE
Techniques, methods, and procedures used in crime detection and criminal investigation; rules of evidence, arrest and court procedures; civil and criminal laws and laws and rules in effect in the County; techniques of securing, evaluating, and preparing evidence and exhibits for trial; search and seizure, service of legal papers and legal rights of citizens; interviewing techniques and procedures; firearms safety.
ABILITY
Plan, organize and direct the work of subordinates; train and supervise subordinates; keep records and prepare, review and evaluate comprehensive reports; express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with law enforcement officials, County personnel, and, the public.
