THE JOB: Under general supervision, perform a variety of semiskilled carpentry, painting, plumbing and electrical work in the repair and maintenance of County buildings and equipment; and do other work as required. The current vacancy is for substitute employment in the General Services Department. The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill future full-time, part-time, substitute, and temporary (extra help) vacancies during the life of the eligible list. *Effective July 11, 2020, this position will be furloughed by 7.5%.
THE REQUIREMENTS: Any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain these knowledge and abilities would be:
Two years of experience performing duties comparable to those of a Building Maintenance Worker II.
OR
Four years of experience performing a variety of semi-skilled carpentry, painting, plumbing, and electrical tasks in the repair and maintenance of buildings and equipment.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession and maintenance of a valid California Class C Driver License upon appointment.
KNOWLEDGE: Thorough knowledge of the basic methods, materials and tools used in the building and maintenance trades. Working knowledge of safe work practices and safety regulations utilized in the building trades; laws and building codes affecting repair and remodeling of County buildings. Some knowledge of methods used in the maintenance of building equipment; the principles of supervision and training.
ABILITY TO: Determine priorities, assign, schedule and evaluate the work of semi skilled and unskilled staff performing building maintenance and repair activities; accurately estimate labor and material costs for repair, remodeling and maintenance projects; perform a wide variety of specialized tasks connected with repair and maintenance of County buildings and fixtures; work from sketches and blueprints; safely lift up to 100 pounds; use tools and equipment of the building trades skillfully and safely; follow written and oral instructions; establish and maintain cooperative-working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; maintain accurate records.
THE EXAMINATION: Your application will be reviewed to determine if you have met the education, experience, training and/or licensing requirements as stated on the job announcement. If you meet these criteria and are one of the best qualified, you may be required to compete in any combination of written, oral and/or performance examinations or a competitive evaluation of training and experience as described on your application. You must pass all components of the examination to be placed on the eligible list. The examination may be eliminated if there are ten or fewer qualified applicants. If the eligible list is established without the administration of the announced examination, the life of the eligible list will be six months and your overall score will be based upon an evaluation of your application. If during those six months it is necessary to administer another examination for this job class, you will be invited to take the examination to remain on the eligible list.
