Salary:  $18.22 / Hour

 

(Hourly salary breakdown: $16.22/hr + $2/hr differential in lieu of benefits and holiday pay)

 

Definition

THE JOB: Environmental Biology Intern will conduct biological field work for the detection of invasive Aedes mosquitoes as well as manage social media accounts. Intern will trap for mosquitoes, collect samples, compile data, and identify mosquitoes using a microscope. They will also create content and develop new social media accounts for public outreach purposes. Intern will use a County issued vehicle, laptop, and cellphone (with ArcGIS Collector) to conduct their work. The current vacancy is in the Office of the Agricultural Commissioner.

HOURS: Part-time (20-32 hours per week) Starting July through mid-September.

Employment Standards

TYPICAL JOB DUTIES:

Mosquito Trapping:
o Maintain various types of mosquito traps on a weekly/ biweekly basis
o Travel within the county to trap sites and follow GIS maps
o Bring samples back to lab and conduct basic identification using a microscope
o Charge/load batteries o Organize and clean trap equipment
o Sample potential breeding sites under supervision

• Data Entry:
o Assist with entering mosquito data into state database
o Keep close records and use a biological identification key

• Social Media Outreach:
o Help in creating social media accounts for public outreach purposes
o Create social media content and manage the accounts

REQUIREMENTS:
• Must be a current student (enrolled in at least 9 units for Summer or Fall)
• Must be of college Freshman or Sophomore standing
• Must possess a California Class C Driver’s License
• Must pass a County physical examination

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
• Microscope/basic laboratory experience
• Basic field work experience
• Ability to use Microsoft Office Suite programs
