Introduction

MWRD's Internship Program offers paid internship positions. While the main focus is on wastewater management, there are opportunities to gain knowledge and practical experience in a wide range of functions in each department.

Paid Interns

Paid interns are limited to 119 working days per calendar year and receive $18.00 per hour. They do not receive benefits or paid days off.

Required Documents: 

  • Letter of recommendation from a class instructor, professor, or Internship Coordinator from current school or university.
  • Cover letter stating interest in position.
  • Resume.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program in an accredited college or university and will be enrolled in the 2024/2025 school year.
  • Permanent residency within the territorial boundaries of the MWRD (students may attend school outside the territorial boundaries).
  • You must be a citizen or national of the United States, or an individual who is otherwise legally authorized to work in the United States.

Description:

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District is seeking an intern to serve in the Local Sewers Section of the Engineering Department. The intern will be trained to draft and create requested GIS layers for sewer atlas records under the direct supervision of a licensed professional engineer. Information to be researched and added to the existing GIS include:

  • limits of combined sewer areas,
  • sanitary district limits,
  • new citizen compliant locations,
  • permit violation locations, and
  • various special requirement areas.
Intern will also assist with the Local Sewers permit database, research permit fee structures of peer agencies, assist with permit inventory, assist with permit determination letters, and attend pre-application meetings to gain experience on new land development requirements.

Minimum Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Training and experience with ESRI ArcGIS preferred.
  • Basic understanding of civil engineering 
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Software
  • Familiarity with civil site plans, such as grading plans, sewer atlas, or plan and profile.

Educational Requirements:

Applicants must be a current college student seeking a degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering or Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
