Anticipation of Eligibility: The minimum requirements for this exam must be met within one (1) year of the close date as announced by the Director of Human Resources.
Veterans' Preference: Veterans' Preference points will be added, in accordance with the District statute, to the scores of those candidates who attain a passing score in all phases of the examination. Veterans' Preference claim forms can be obtained through the District's website, by clicking here, or requested at the test site. An employee who receives a promotion from an eligible list on which he or she received Veterans' Preference points will not be eligible for Veterans' Preference points on any future promotional examinations.
Probationary Period: The probationary period for this classification is one year (250 days worked).

Duties: Under general supervision, performs ordinary electrical engineering work in connection with electrical design, construction, maintenance and operations.
Promotional Requirements: One year of service with the District as an Assistant Electrical Engineer; or possession of a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and one year of service with the District as an Assistant Civil Engineer, Assistant Mechanical Engineer, Assistant Structural Engineer, Treatment Plant Operator II, Engineering Technician V, Operating Engineer II or Engineering Draftsman III. Civil service status in one of the foregoing classifications.
A bachelor's degree in electrical engineering is interpreted to mean a four-year program which has been accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). Effective October 31, 2006, foreign-educated applicants must produce a satisfactory assessment of their academic qualifications by the Center for Professional Engineering Education Services (CPEES), a unit of the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES), or present an undergraduate degree from a school that is recognized by the Washington Accord. Prior to October 31, 2006, assessment by the Engineering Credentials Evaluation International (ECEI) was deemed qualifying. The NCEES assessment and any additional coursework used to correct deficiencies must be completed by the anticipation date. Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Illinois or another state will be accepted in lieu of an assessment for foreign-educated applicants.
Examination: The examination will consist of a written test weighted 90%, an efficiency rating weighted 5% and a seniority rating weighted 5%. The minimum passing score on the written test will be 70% unless determined otherwise by the Director of Human Resources. Candidates must achieve a passing score on each test to have their names placed on the eligible list.
The written test will assess candidates' knowledge, skill and ability in areas such as principles, practices and techniques of electrical engineering in areas such as basic electronics and AC/DC principles; electrical power systems; Boolean logic; PLC systems; industrial controls; DCS & SCADA systems; troubleshooting of electrical machines; preparing and interpreting ladder logic and control schematics for motor control; converters and communication systems; preparing and reading conduit layout, single line, schematic and wiring diagrams; short circuits, wire size, electrical load and fault conditions; National Electric Code (NEC) and National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) standards for installation of equipment and materials; cost estimation; project management and Microsoft Office software; and interpersonal and written communication.

Written Test: Candidates admitted to the written test will be informed by email of the date, time and place of the written test.
