MWRD's Internship Program offers paid internship positions. While the main focus is on wastewater management, there are opportunities to gain knowledge and practical experience in a wide range of functions in each department.

Paid Interns

Paid interns are limited to 119 working days per calendar year and receive $18.00 per hour. They do not receive benefits or paid days off.

Required Documents:

  • Letter of recommendation from a class instructor, professor, or Internship Coordinator from current school or university.
  • Cover letter stating interest in position.
  • Resume.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Enrollment in a degree-seeking program in an accredited college or university.
  • Permanent residency within the territorial boundaries of the MWRD (students may attend school outside the territorial boundaries).
  • You must be a citizen or national of the United States, or an individual who is otherwise legally authorized to work in the United States.

Description:

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District is seeking an intern to serve in the Local Sewers Section of the Engineering Department. The intern will gain experience in civil engineering components of site design, specifically: engineering calculations, stormwater reports, geotechnical reports, wetland reports, and construction drawings/details.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the creation of GIS layers for separate sewer area tributary to combined sewer areas, sanitary districts, citizen complaints, violations, and special requirement areas. 
  • Help revise permit flow charts to determine permit applicability and permit requirements. 
  • Assist with troubleshooting the Local Sewer Systems database 
  • Attend permit pre-application meetings
  • Assist with reviewing documents for the infiltration/inflow control program.
  • Read and interpret construction drawings for utilities, drainage, erosion/sediment control, sanitary sewer lift stations, flood control, bridge/road construction, and stormwater detention basins.

Rate of Pay:

This is a paid internship at $18.00/hr.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Interest in civil engineering, land development, sewer collection systems, and hydrology/hydraulics
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Can work both independently and within a team environment

Educational Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program majoring in civil engineering, geography, or GIS.
  • Ability to work with ESRI ArcGIS.
