Introduction

MWRD's Internship Program offers paid internship positions. While the main focus is on wastewater management, there are opportunities to gain knowledge and practical experience in a wide range of functions in each department.

Paid Interns

Paid interns are limited to 119 working days per calendar year and receive $18.00 per hour. They do not receive benefits or paid days off.

Required Documents:

  • Letter of recommendation from a class instructor, professor, or Internship Coordinator from current school or university.
  • Cover letter stating interest in position.
  • Resume.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Enrollment in a degree-seeking program in an accredited college or university.
  • Permanent residency within the territorial boundaries of the MWRD (students may attend school outside the territorial boundaries).
  • You must be a citizen or national of the United States, or an individual who is otherwise legally authorized to work in the United States.

Description:

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) is seeking an intern to serve in the Board of Commissioner's Offices. Looking for an energetic, hard-working, civic-minded individual to assist in a Commissioner's office in managing office activities and legislative priorities. This position includes a combination of project coordination, public outreach and communication, marketing, social media coordination, and administrative tasks.

As part of the internship, the intern can lead a research-based project. The commissioner's team will be a partner in creating, facilitating, supporting, and providing resources for you to research and learn aligned with MWRD's and the office's mission & goals.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Aid in coordinating and planning prescribed plans and events
  • Policy and legislative research & providing updates
  • Assist in leading events
  • Represent Commissioner at various events or meetings
  • Able to support in-person events in Cook County
  • Compose various correspondence, reports and other documents
  • Community outreach includes contacting public officials and drafting communications
  • Track completion of assignments
  • Support office administrative duties

Rate of Pay:

This is a paid internship at $18.00/hr.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Passion for sustainability and/or government, civic-based work
  • Excellent written and verbal communication through experience sending professional emails and verbal phone communication
  • Environmental policy and/or activism knowledge in Chicago and/or Illinois
  • Proficiency with Google applications, Microsoft office, and web technology
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently and collaboratively
  • A positive, welcoming attitude and comfortable working with diverse groups
  • Project coordination and marketing/communications experience preferred and not required

Educational Requirements:

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at an accredited university. Open to all majors.
