Introduction

Maryland Public Television, commonly known as MPT, is a public television network that broadcasts throughout the entire state of Maryland and the District of Columbia and into parts of Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia. MPT is Maryland's only statewide broadcaster. Headquartered in Owings Mills, MPT is a member of the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) and is a producer of both locally and nationally distributed TV programs and digital content.

Main Purpose of Job

The MPT Assistant Producer will assist the MotorWeek Road Test team with all aspects of road test segment production, including prepping and cleaning cars for shoots, driving vehicles for shots, and assisting with setup and operation of DSLR, slider, GoPro, and other specialty cameras and equipment. This contractual position will assist in conducting research, locating and obtaining video, photographs and other media assets from outside sources including internet download and vehicle manufacturer press archives. The incumbent will travel to attend press events on behalf of MotorWeek and contribute to MotorWeek's social media platforms.

This is a Special Appointment position and serves at the pleasure of the Appointing Authority.

POSITION DUTIES

  • Assist the Road Test Producer with the field production of the Road Test segment. Test and evaluate cars, provide commentary and empirical data to writers and show producers. Log and archive original footage and, when necessary, procure additional footage from outside sources. Manage the maintenance of MotorWeek long-term test vehicles.
  • Assist the online content producer with creating and managing video and other content for social media platforms and mobile app. Assist with the production of Your Drive segments, host standups, and other areas of the production as needed.
  • Perform on-camera duties as demonstrator/segment host for various aspects of the production.
  • Attend industry vehicle launches and press events as an editorial representative of MotorWeek.
  • Other duties include organizing and maintaining MotorWeek's video archive and log footage, and assisting with podcasts and other areas of the MotorWeek production as needed. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Bachelor's degree in film, media, mass communications, or related field OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.  

Experience: One (1) year of experience which involved the various aspects of television production such as research, segment production, set-up and operation of DSLR, slider, GoPro, and other specialty cameras and equipment.  Note: Experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education only.

For education obtained outside the U.S., a copy of the equivalent American education as determined by a foreign credential evaluation service must accompany the application.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Strong preference will be given to applicants that possess the following preferred qualification(s). Include clear and specific information on your application regarding these qualifications.  
  • Excellent attention to detail and willingness to be creative 
  • Working knowledge of video equipment and software is a plus 
  • Strong organizational skills Understanding of social media platforms and trends 
  • Strong knowledge of working with computers, email, word processing software, and ordinary office equipment 
  • Knowledge of and enthusiasm for automobiles and/or the auto industry
  • Some on-air experience is preferred

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

The selected candidate must be willing to work flexible hours to include a short turnaround, overtime, holidays, and weekends.   

The selected candidate must be able to lift 50 lbs. or more due to the weight of the equipment.
