Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this position is to assist staff from the DNR's Recruit, Retain and Reactivate (R3) Team to recruit, retain, and reactivate anglers and boaters by helping plan, promote, and lead outreach events with staff from across the department including the Office of Outdoor Recreation (OOR), Chesapeake and Coastal Service (CCS), Fishing and Boating Services (FABS) and Maryland Parks Service (MPS).

 The internship runs twelve (12) weeks between June and August. The specific start/end dates, hours, and schedule will be determined in collaboration between the intern and their supervisor.

POSITION DUTIES

Intern Duties:

  • Assist with implementing various events by units in R3 across the state that involve teaching fishing, kayaking, archery, and other outdoor recreation activities; 
  • Work with staff in the FABS to coordinate use of fishing trailers and track events; 
  • Coordinate requests for use of the R3 Team’s resources; 
  • Identify opportunities to combine use of department resources and staff; 
  • Coordinate communication/scheduling between units involved in fishing outreach (CES, FABS, Parks) to maximize staff and resource efficiency; 
  • Update the Angler R3 Implementation Plan with implemented activities and metrics and provide recommendations on updates to the plan; 
  • Promote R3 outreach events to new communities and potential customers;  
  • Help organize, sort and distribute fishing gear from CES to loaner sites; 
  • Assist OOR with planning the Outdoor Recreation Summit; 
  • Assist with upcoming angler workshops and adult mentorship events; 
  • Update and maintain the R3 shared calendar; 
  • Create a social media schedule to provide the Office of Communications with regular posts; 
  • Provide or assist with photography and video content at various events and locations around the state. Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Applicant must be a current college student at the undergraduate or graduate level. A GPA of 2.5 or above is required.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Previous customer service experience. Experience fishing, kayaking and/or participating in other outdoor recreation activities. Experience and/or skills in communications, education, environmental studies, ecology, marketing, or similar. Comfortable recreating outdoors and spending time in nature.

SELECTION PROCESS

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
