Main Purpose of Job

The Maryland Department of General Services (DGS) is looking to hire talented and experienced leaders to fill an Assistant Superintendent position with the Office of Facilities Management. The Assistant Superintendent is responsible for providing oversight and direction for all facilities projects and daily maintenance operations as well as assisting the Superintendent in providing leadership in the day-to-day administration, budget preparation, supervision and operation of the regional facilities. 

The incumbent must be available to assist as needed during off-duty hours in the event of an emergency or when the Superintendent is not available.

POSITION DUTIES

Duties include but are not limited to: 

· Facilities Operations: Direct and coordinate activities related to the maintenance, security, and building functions associated with the facilities in the region. Act as a liaison with all tenants and outside agencies and personnel. Oversee the development of Standard Operating Procedures for the region. 

· Supervision and Leadership: Provide guidance and leadership to administrative staff, regional managers and their staff, and facility maintenance teams that include various skilled trades and maintenance specialists. Work together with the Superintendent to mediate and address disciplinary issues and ensure vacant positions are filled in a timely manner. Provide leadership and training opportunities for growth and development of staff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

- Four (4) years of full-time experience in a responsible professional capacity in the operation of a large public building, hospital, educational complex, industrial plant or large commercial structure.

- Three (3) years of this experience should include responsibility for fiscal planning, office management and supervision of skilled building maintenance personnel.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Strong preference will be given to applicants who possess the following preferred qualification(s). Include clear and specific information on your application regarding all qualifications.

- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university is preferred.

- Strong written and verbal communication skills for interacting with executive and senior leadership, agency management, staff, vendors and building tenants.

The examination for this position will consist of a rating of your education, training and experience related to the requirements of the position.  The eligibility list will be valid for one year and may be extended.  The list will be used by the hiring authority to select employees for interviews.  Eligible lists may be used to fill future vacancies of the same classification.


Please note, selected candidates may be required to complete and successfully pass a State and Federal fingerprint background check prior to being hired.
