Main Purpose of Job

The Department of Natural Resources (Department), Freshwater Fisheries and Hatcheries Division is currently accepting applications for a Program Manager I position. This position directs all aspects of the Coldwater Production Program for the Department’s Fishing and Boating Services unit. The position is responsible for production management, facility maintenance and operations, staff management, hatchery discharge and appropriation permits, chemical usage compliance, employee safety and health programs, fish health and biosecurity, capital improvement project management, develop monthly reports, and annual budget and administrative responsibilities for Maryland’s coldwater fish production facilities. This includes oversight of the Albert Powell Hatchery, Cushwa Hatchery, Mettiki Hatchery and Bear Creek Hatchery.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:  A Bachelor’s degree in biology, biochemistry, environmental science, aquaculture, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology or physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management, zoology or a natural resources management related field of study from an accredited college or university.

Experience:  Six years of experience in professional work at a cold water aquaculture facility; including a minimum of two years of experience as a supervisor, managing a cold water aquaculture facility.

Notes:
1. Additional graduate level education in aquaculture or fisheries management from an accredited college or university may be substituted at the rate of 30 semester credit hours on a year to year basis for the required general experience.

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

Two years supervisory experience working in a cold water aquaculture facility or hatchery. 

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The preferred applicant will demonstrate at least two years of professional experience directing, managing, or engineering coldwater aquaculture facilities or hatcheries.  This entails knowledge of facility production capabilities, fish culture techniques, production strategies, fish health/biosecurity, database management, water quality monitoring, and transportation of live fish.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Persons in this position may be assigned duties which require the operation of an automobile or other motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess the appropriate operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
