Main Purpose of Job

This position will serve as School Facilities Architect performing advanced architectural activities of the Office of School Facilities, Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE). The incumbent will assist in management of statewide school facilities programs assigned to the Department by regulations, including review and approval of complex, multi-year, capital construction plans and assist in the management of the Department of Education Section of the Interagency Commission on School Construction (IAC).

The School Facilities Architect will also assist with research and development of standards and guidelines for the planning and design of school facilities, as well as provide technical assistance and coordinate special capital projects for local education agency staff, state employees, government officials, professional consultants, local board of education members and staff, members of special task forces, and the public on school planning, design, construction, and maintenance issues.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Architecture.

Experience: Five years of experience as a licensed professional architect in the design of major institutional buildings are required.

Note: 
1. Candidates may substitute additional experience as defined above directly related to the position at the rate of one year of experience for each year of the required education. 
2. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Master’s degree in Architecture from an accredited college or university for one year of the required experience.

  • Possession of a current license as a professional architect in Maryland or a state with comparable requirements is required.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to applicants who possess the following preferred qualification(s). Include clear and specific information on your application regarding your qualifications.

  • Experience in Educational or K-12 facilities planning 
  • Knowledge of construction codes and state and local regulations regarding building and planning of school buildings 
  • Experience developing design guidelines/standards, facility program, or feasibility studies 
  • Experience working with public sector entities on projects

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

  • Qualified candidates must possess a current Professional license in Architecture.
  • Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must consent to State and FBI (CJIS) background check as a routine procedure for all employees. Proof of eligibility to work in compliance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act and occasional travel throughout the state are required. BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
