Introduction
The Maryland State Retirement Agency is the administrator of the Maryland State Retirement and Pension System (“System”). The System is a qualified defined benefit retirement plan providing retirement, disability, and death benefits to over 400,000 members, retirees, and beneficiaries. The System’s members include State employees, teachers of all County schools within Maryland, Correctional Officers, State Police Officers, Judges, Legislators, and employees of local governments that elect to participate in the System.

Main Purpose of Job
The Student Technical Assistant (“Summer Intern”) is a summer internship position within
the Benefits Administration Division of the Maryland State Retirement Agency. A Summer
Intern will be primarily assigned to one of the Division’s Units: Benefits Processing, Data
Control, Member Services, or Special Projects. However, as the Division’s needs dictate, a
Summer Intern may work in more than one Unit during their employment.
POSITION DUTIES
The Benefit Administration Division of the Maryland State Retirement Agency is recruiting for six (6)summer internship positions. These are full-time positions scheduled to work Monday through Friday8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. or 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in our offices located at 120 E. Baltimore Street, Baltimore, Maryland 21202. Selected candidates will be expected to start work on May 22, 2024,and continue through August 20, 2024. These dates are flexible for candidates who need to start a week later or leave a week early due to school schedules. These are hands on positions.
Duties may include:
- Reviewing pension payroll data to resolve data errors.
- Reviewing and processing new enrollment applications.
- Reviewing and processing retirement applications.
- Reviewing and processing refund applications and tax withholding forms.
- Assisting with reconciling productions jobs.
- Preparing mailings.
- Filing completed work.
- Other administrative and office support functions.
Selected candidates will gain valuable experience working in a professional environment and will acquire valuable knowledge of defined benefit retirement plans.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Graduation from an accredited high school and pursuing a bachelor’s degree from an
accredited college or university.
Experience: None.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Pursuing or intent to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Economics, Finance, Management, Public Administration, or related field.
SELECTION PROCESS

Successful candidates will be placed on the employment (eligible) list for at least one year. This list will be used by the hiring agency to select employees.

BENEFITS
Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
