POSITION DUTIES

A Warden in this class plans, administers, coordinates and reviews the security, treatment and administrative programs of a correctional facility in the state of Maryland. Work involves directing professional, technical, security, clerical, and other staff and subordinate managerial staff. This position is responsible for adult facility management and supervisory work of unusual difficulty in directing all security, treatment and administration for facilities. Employees in this classification supervise the Assistant Warden, Correctional Security Chiefs, and other staff. Manages and administers annual budget, including estimates and justifications. Responsible for assuring audit compliance by adhering to policy. Work is performed in a correctional facility and employees are exposed to inmates who may be abusive and hostile.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: High School diploma or G.E.D. certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education as described in the Correctional Training Commission regulation.

Experience: One year of experience as an Assistant Warden or three years of experience as Facility Administrator or five years as a Security Chief. 

Notes: 

1. Candidates may substitute additional education at an accredited college or university at the rate of sixty credit hours for one year of the required experience provided that a minimum of 15 credit hours are in the field of criminal justice or related social science. Please note that only current Assistant Wardens may use this education to substitute for any of the required Assistant Warden experience. Other applicants may use this education to substitute for up to a year of the Facility Administrator or Security Chief experience.

2.  Experience as a Director or Manager of a program within a correction institution can be substituted for the required experience as a Security Chief on a year for year basis for the Security Chief experience.

3.  Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience in correctional classifications or correctional specialty codes similar to Assistant Warden, Facility Administrator or Security Chief on a year for year basis. 

4. Experience served in positions similar to the rank Facility Administrator and Security Chief in other jurisdictions will be considered on a year-for-year basis.
