POSITION DUTIES

​​The Comptroller of Maryland, Revenue Accounting section of the Revenue Administration Division, located in beautiful downtown Annapolis, is currently seeking to hire a dependable, energetic, team player, as Accountant I, to join our team. Are you detail oriented, have advanced skills in Microsoft excel, can prepare journal entries in accounting, able to work with moderate supervision once trained, have the ability to enter financial data with accuracy into a state ledger, maintain accounting systems, prepare financial reports or statements and are able to thrive in a time sensitive, fast paced environment?  If so, then this is the job for you! 

The Accountant I position is an intermediate level position within the agency that works examining, analyzing and interpreting accounting systems, records and reports by applying generally accepted accounting principles in order to modify and maintain agency accounting systems, prepare financial reports or statements, and give fiscal advice to management. May also supervise the work of Fiscal Account Technicians or clerks or other related personnel. Teleworking is an option after the completion of the probation period. 

​Please Note: May be requested to work evenings and/or Saturdays during Tax Season. For the purpose of this statement, Tax Season shall be defined as the period beginning January 15th and close May 15th.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Bachelor's degree in Accounting from an accredited college or university, including or supplemented by three credit hours in auditing.

Experience: One year of experience examining, analyzing and interpreting accounting systems, records and reports by applying generally accepted accounting principles.

NOTES:

  1. Candidates may substitute a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with thirty credit hours in Accounting and related courses, including or supplemented by three credit hours in auditing, for the required education.
  2. Applicants who have met the requirements for admission to the CPA examination prior to July 1, 1974 will be considered to have met the educational requirement referenced above.
  3. Possession of a certificate as a Certified Public Accountant or a Master's degree in accounting from an accredited college or university may be substituted for the required experience.
  4. Applicants may substitute one year of professional auditing experience for the required experience. 
  5. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in the Accounting Officer classification or Financial Management specialty codes in the Accounting field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.
** For education obtained outside of the U.S., you will be required to provide proof of the equivalent American education as determined by a foreign credential evaluation service. If you possess a degree obtained outside of the United States, please submit a detailed, course-by-course evaluation report from one of the U.S. equivalency evaluating members identified at http://www.naces.org/members.html.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Advanced Proficiency in Microsoft Excel. Experience with cloud-based accounting software.

EXAMINATION PROCESS

Only applicants who meet the minimum and selective qualifications for this recruitment will be considered for this opportunity. Qualifying applicants are subject to an oral interview. Prior to appointment, the employee must successfully undergo a comprehensive background investigation including a review of criminal, MVA and tax records; and determination of legal authorization to work in the United States or under the United States Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986. This background check is comprehensive and may involve fingerprinting. Upon initial appointment OR promotion to a position in the State Personnel Management System, an employee is required to serve an initial six- month probationary period. This probationary period may be extended an additional six months under certain circumstances at the discretion of the appointing authority.
