Introduction
This is a position specific recruitment for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife and Heritage. This recruitment will be used to fill current vacancies for the position and may be used to fill future vacancies in the same classification/function. Future vacancies may also be filled via other recruitments. The resulting eligible list will be maintained for one year.

Main Purpose of Job
This position is responsible for assisting with implementing certain outreach and education
programs for DNR’s Wildlife & Heritage Service (WHS). The incumbent works closely with
Natural Heritage Outreach and Education staff, state educators, and the public to assist with
filling educational outreach needs and priorities. This position assists with multiple outreach
programs, including Project WILD, MD State Fair, Envirothon, Wild Acres, and Backyard
Wildlife. Overall, these programs educate tens of thousands of Maryland's citizens every year.
Project Wild and Envirothon directly reach thousands of students in the classroom and in
outdoor settings each year. Project Wild and Envirothon also serve to instruct hundreds of
educators in the environmental sciences each year, which they in turn share with their students.
POSITION DUTIES
The Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife and Heritage Service, Natural Heritage Program in Annapolis, is currently accepting applications for a Natural Resources Biologist II.
This position is responsible for assisting with certain outreach and education programs for the DNR Wildlife & Heritage Service. The incumbent works closely with agency personnel, state educators, and environmentalists to determine educational outreach needs and priorities, interpret scientific data, and evaluate curriculum. This position assists with multiple outreach programs, including Project WILD, MD State Fair, Envirothon, Wild Acres, and Backyard Wildlife. Overall, these programs educate tens of thousands of Maryland's citizens every year, including hundreds of educators and thousands of students.
The incumbent also develops and distributes educational material, such as fact sheets, brochures, and web resources, and responds to numerous inquiries from the public. This position works with field biologists and may also serve as a field biologist to gather and interpret data for rare species and habitats and assist with population monitoring efforts. This position may work with volunteers or interns.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Experience: Four years of professional experience conducting research and analysis in the fields of biology, biochemistry, environmental science, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology, physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management or zoology and two years of experience in performing professional biological work in the field of natural resources management.

Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor’s degree in biology,
environmental aquaculture, natural science, natural resources management,
botany, marine biology, marine ecology or physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries
management, wildlife management, zoology, or a natural resources management
related field of study from an accredited college or university and two years
of experience in performing professional biological work in the field of
natural resources management for the required experience.

Candidates may substitute graduate education beyond a Bachelor's degree from an
accredited college or university in a natural resources related field of study
as described above at the rate of 15 graduate credit hours for one year of the
required experience.

Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as
a commissioned officer in the natural resources management and biological
sciences classifications or natural resources management and biological
sciences specialty codes in the wildlife biology field of work on a
year-for-year basis for the required experience.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Possession of a Bachelor’s degree in biology, biochemistry, environmental science, aquaculture, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology or physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management, zoology or a natural resources management related field of study.
- At least two years of experience in developing and giving presentations on wildlife and their habitats to students, teachers, conservation groups, and/or other organizations, and including one year experience with facilitator training for Project WILD.
- At least two years of experience and proficiency with writing informative and interesting educational material for students and the public, such as curricula, articles, newsletters, fact sheets, webpages, and social media posts.
- Knowledge of and interest in the conservation of the plants, animals, and natural areas of Maryland or the mid-Atlantic region.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
