Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of the job is to screen every firearm related case for Federal, State, County and local law enforcement agencies to ensure that the investigation is complete, the defendant is properly charged, the prosecutor is prepared to aggressively prosecute the matter and the defendant is held accountable for his/her actions.

POSITION DUTIES

Responsible for efficiently managing and overseeing the entire process of answering calls, responding to emails, and handling other essential correspondence concerning gun offenders and gun crimes. The role will encompass not only ensuring prompt and accurate responses but also closely monitoring the unit's performance, providing guidance and support to address complex cases, and implementing strategies to enhance overall efficiency and effectiveness. Utilizing crucial communication channel, you will play a pivotal role in maintaining public safety and upholding the law within the context of gun-related offenses.

Examine, interpret, and proficiently utilize an extensive array of databases, encompassing: METERS/NCIC, Master Query, MVA Driver Query, Triple I Inquiry Transaction (QH and QR), Maryland Criminal Justice Information System, etc.

Establishing, organizing, and maintaining a meticulous database, while diligently updating, searching, tracking, and safeguarding all vital records, ledgers, and files. your keen attention to detail and efficient management of this critical repository will significantly contribute to the unit's operational success and efficiency.

Leading and guiding your team in the intricate process of identifying and classifying various firearms. Your expertise and guidance will ensure accuracy and consistency in firearm identification, bolstering the unit's capabilities in tackling gun-related crimes.

Conducting and supervising in-depth and thorough background investigations into both suspects and firearms. Collaborating with other supervisory personnel to design and implement training programs, ensuring your team remains well equipped with the latest investigative techniques, legal procedures, and technological advancements.

Other duties as assigned by supervisory or command personnel.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Four years of administrative staff or professional work.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute 30 college credit hours from an accredited college or university for each year up to four years of the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university for the required experience.

3. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Master's degree from an accredited college or university for the required experience.

4. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer involving staff work related to the administration of rules, regulations, policy, procedures and processes, or overseeing or coordinating unit operations or functioning as a staff assistant to a higher ranking commissioned officer on a year-for- year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Qualifications:

1. Knowledge and experience in State of Maryland and Federal Firearms Regulations and Laws. 
2. Experience utilizing Criminal History Databases and Law Enforcement Sensitive Resources nationwide. 
3. Prior law enforcement experience at the Federal, State, County or local levels of government.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

In accordance with Section 2-204(b)(6) of the Public Safety Article, Candidates for position in this classification will be subject to an initial drug screening and a complete criminal background investigation to include a polygraph examination before permanent appointment can be made. A criminal conviction may be grounds for rejection of the candidate.

SELECTION PROCESS

The selection process for this recruitment will involve a rating of the training and experience provided on the application. Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be placed on an eligible list in the BEST QUALIFIED, BETTER QUALIFIED, and QUALIFIED categories. The list will be used by the hiring manager to select the individual to fill this vacancy. The list will be valid for one year.

EXAMINATION PROCESS

The examination will consist of a rating of your education, training and experience related to the requirements of the position. You may be required to complete a qualifications supplement, or the rating may be based on your application. Report all experience and education that is related to this position. Applicants may be given a physical examination and will be subject to an interview, background investigation, polygraph examination and substance abuse testing.
