The Department oversees and serves as a regulatory body for animal health and consumer services to include marketing and lab services, plant and pest management, and resource conservation.  As the number one industry in Maryland, the diversity of agriculture programs in the State continues to expand and grow

 

Seeking to hire (2) Field Technicians to assist in survey and detection activities for invasive insect pests.  This is contractual employment and workers will be paid for actual hours worked only. Limited paid leave and health benefits available.


Note: Hours will vary due to weather and other factors, but Full-Time - 40 hours/week are generally available throughout the year.

Main Purpose of Job

The Maryland Department of Agriculture is seeking two field technicians to assist in survey and detection activities for invasive insect pests. Duties will include surveys of insects and maintenance of insect traps throughout Maryland, accurate data collection with use of equipment such as GPS units and personal computers. Work may involve interactions with the public, exposure to biting/stinging insects, ticks, poison ivy, high temperature, humidity and other outdoors exposure. Employees are required to use personal protective equipment. Training will be provided.

POSITION DUTIES

Duties will include:

  • Surveys of insects and maintenance of insect traps throughout Maryland,
  • Accurate data collection, and use of equipment such as GPS units and personal computers.
  • Work may also involve interactions with the public.
  • Work will involve exposure to biting/stinging insects, ticks, poison ivy, high temperature and humidity and other outdoors exposure. Employees may be required to use personal protective equipment.
  • Training will be provided.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must be at least 18 years of age and possess a license to drive in the State of Maryland (with no more than 5 points on driving record).

Education: High School Diploma or GED

Experience: Previous experience with biological field work preferred but not required.

SELECTION PROCESS

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
