As part of the Maryland State Department of Education, the Division of Rehabilitation Services (DORS) provides services to assist students with disabilities prepare for the work world, vocational rehabilitation services to assist adults with significant disabilities who are seeking to enter or reenter the workforce, and the adjudication of Social Security disability claims for the citizens of Maryland.

POSITION DUTIES

This position provides support to the disability claims adjudication process through the timely and accurate processing of requests for consultative examinations (CE), scheduling appointments with CE Providers, and generating correspondence, which promotes the efficient processing of adult and childhood initial, reconsideration, continuing disability review, and hearings workload claims.

Job Duties Include:         
  • To ensure timely and accurate CE scheduling, review each CE request to ensure appropriateness utilizing extensive knowledge of medical exams, tests, and CPT codes: verify that required authorizations have been obtained: and resolve any discrepancies with claims examiner prior to scheduling.         
  • Utilize automated vendor rotation system, taking into consideration CE provider capabilities, special needs of claimants, special arrangements, and appointment lead times; select CE provider for new CE appointments and reschedule cancelled and broken appointments.         
  • Analyze options when specific needs cannot be met in claimant’s geographical area, provide alternative suggestions to operations examiners, quality assurance specialists, supervisors; and/or work with the Medical Relations Office to make special arrangements.        
  • Contact CE Provider or utilize pre-set block times on the case processing system to obtain appointment date and time; document the case file by entering appointment information into the case processing system and generate authorization letters/appointment notices to provider, claimant, third party and/or any other claimant representative.        
  • Determine if travel reimbursement is appropriate and complete stand-alone reimbursement as needed. 
  • Coordinate multiple CE requests for an individual claimant with other schedulers to avoid conflicts in scheduled times.  
  • Sort and separate appointment notices and prepare them for mailing. 
  • Utilize Social Security Administration's (SSA's) National Case Processing System (NCPS) and maintain up to date review of the functionality guides specific to the consultative examination process, with new monthly implementation.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: One year of experience performing administrative staff, clerical, clerical technical, or secretarial work. 

Notes: 
1. Candidates may substitute 30 credit hours from an accredited college or university for the required experience. 
2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer involving staff work requiring regular use of independent judgment and analysis in applying and interpreting rules and regulations in accordance with agency laws and policies on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Professional experience using/working with medical terminology
Experience using the Microsoft Office suite

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Conditional job offers and access to Social Security Administration’s (SSA’s) systems, data, information, and/or premises are contingent upon you passing the SSA suitability process. A suitability determination by the Social Security Administration is necessary to determine whether an employee can be issued credentials.
