GEOLOGIST III, ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAMS

The Geologist III/Remedial Project Manager (RPM) will provide oversight of environmental investigations and activities associated with federal facilities contaminated with hazardous materials. The incumbent in this position must apply both theoretical and practical knowledge of geology and base sciences of physics, chemistry, and mathematics in the evaluation of site-specific situations and response actions. It is critical that the incumbent has working knowledge of the use of geological cross-sections, maps, and field sampling methodologies. The Geologist III will be responsible for ensuring that state regulations and concerns are addressed during the conduct of these highly technical and geologically oriented investigations and actions. The incumbent in this position will report to a Geologist Supervisor on a daily basis but independently perform work in the headquarters office, field sites, or at off-site meeting locations. The incumbent must be physically able to wear a full-face respirator, pass a 40-hour health and safety training course, and be able to walk unaided 100 yards over rough terrain.

The working conditions of this position may involve exposure to uncomfortable or unpleasant surroundings. Site visits may be conducted in all kinds of inclement weather. The working conditions of this position may involve exposure to hazardous conditions which may result in injury. Responsibilities of the RPM include the inspection of actions conducted at sites that are potentially contaminated with hazardous substances. Work requires the use of protective equipment such as goggles, gloves, mask, etc. When going on site visits, protective gear is mandatory.

Education:   A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Geology, Environmental Geology or a related earth science.

Experience: Three years of experience performing professional geological work.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Geology, Environmental Geology or a related earth science for the required education and one year of the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher as a commissioned officer in physical science classification or physical science specialty codes in the geology field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

1. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

2. Depending on the assigned essential functions of the work, employees in this classification may be required to successfully complete and maintain certification as specified in the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration Regulations (Standards-29 CFR) 1910.120 Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response. Information about these regulations is available in the Human Resources Office of the Maryland Department of the Environment or may be obtained at the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration Website.

1. Employees in this classification may be required to walk over rough or unstable terrain or over long distances while wearing personal protection equipment such as respiratory protection equipment.

2. Employees in this classification may be subject to ongoing medical testing in accordance with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration Regulations (Standards - 29 CFR) 1910.120 Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response. The Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) Medical Monitoring Program (MMP) is designed to detect health risks or adverse effects of occupational exposure to hazardous materials and to direct targeted treatment and occupational illness/injury prevention strategies.  MDE employees who may be exposed to hazardous materials are required to participate in a pre-placement, regular and/or post-termination medical examination.  MDE has determined that this position be part of the MMP; therefore, applicants selected for employment must successfully complete and pass the medical monitoring examination as a condition of employment. Information regarding the MMP is provided by the Maryland Department of the Environment or may be obtained at the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration website.

3. Employees in this classification may be subject to call-in on a twenty-four hour basis and, therefore, will be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached.

4.Employees in this position will perform site visits and will require access that must be granted and approved by the Department of Defense (DOD).

PERSONAL LEAVE - New State employees are awarded six (6) personal leave days annually (prorated based on start date).
