Introduction
The Maryland School for the Deaf provides an inclusive,
language-rich environment for deaf and hard of hearing students from birth
through age 21. Rooted in a bilingual education approach, we ensure full access
to American Sign Language and English across comprehensive academic,
extracurricular, and student life programs. In partnership with families and
communities, we empower students to think critically and develop a sense of
self and belonging.
This is a twelve-month position in the High School Department of the Frederick Campus of the
Maryland School for the Deaf.
LOCATION OF POSITION

Main Purpose of Job
To lead and manage daily high school operations in partnership with the high school principal;
provide proactive administrative support, logistics coordination, and operational supervision to maximize the high school principal's time for instructional leadership, staff development, and student achievement.
POSITION DUTIES
Monitor student attendance, including managing three-day email follow-ups and preparing five-day
official correspondence for the High School Principal;
Oversee and maintain departmentwide attendance and operational systems, including hallway pass
protocols and student break regulations;
Facilitate Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) meetings for student behavior and social
emotional domains, monitor behavior data collection for Tier 2 and Tier 3 students, and collaborate
closely with the Behavior Specialist to support classroom interventions and staff coaching;
Provide coaching and instructional support to teachers regarding student behavior initiatives and
effective classroom management strategies;
Manage all levels of student behavioral infractions in coordination with the Behavior Specialist as
appropriate, and assist/collaborate with the High School Principal regarding Level 3 behavioral
interventions as required;
Coordinate student re-entry meetings and the development of corresponding student support plans;
Investigate routine student incidents, including Bullying, Harassment and Intimidation report
investigations;
Develop and coordinate schoolwide Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) events in collaboration with the
mental health team, assemblies, and student recognition initiatives, including honor roll celebrations,
half-day events, orientation weeks, and end-of-year activities;
Collaborate with the High School Principal to compile, analyze, and interpret student performance
and behavioral data;
Deliver targeted mentoring and onboarding support to new instructional staff during the initial six
weeks of the academic year, focusing on school Code of Conduct and operational systems and
policies;
Assist the High School Principal in the preparation of department meeting presentations, facilitation
of small group discussions, and delivery of high school-focused professional development;
Support the implementation and fidelity of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) related to
student behavior, collaborate with the behavior specialist to support teachers and staff with
behavioral data collection for quarterly progress reports, and train instructional staff on the
appropriate utilization of accommodations and supplementary aids;
Assist in the development and implementation of IEPs related to student behavior and participate in
IEP meetings related to student behavior as appropriate;
Serve as the secondary Point of Contact (POC) for families during the absence or unavailability of
the High School Principal;
Communicate with families, staff and students related to student behavior and performance;
Support the design and content of the High School’s monthly digital newsletter, and draft official
communications and letters to families;
Coordinate logistics, scheduling, and operations for schoolwide assessments, field trips, and special
programs.
Supervise and evaluate job performance of secretaries and teacher aides;
Assist in the assessment of staff needs and providing staff development related to behavior and
SEL;
Participate in the coordination of class scheduling and class coverage with substitutes;
Participate in the review of applications, interview applicants, and submit recommendations for hire
of new secretaries and teacher aides as needed;
Assume other responsibilities as designated by the Chief Educational Programs Officer and/or High
School Principal.
This position reports directly to the High School Principal.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: A Bachelor’s Degree required.
Experience: A minimum of three years of successful K-12 work experience with Deaf and Hard of
Hearing students is required.
Understanding of basic behavior principles and school wide behavior programs and interventions
required. Fluency in American Sign Language and written English, and knowledge of Deaf
community required. Superior interpersonal and active listening skills required.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience in administration/supervision preferred.
- Experience in leadership activities that involve organizing, planning, directing, and monitoring resources preferred.
- Experience supporting and managing complex student behavior at the middle school or high school level preferred.
- Knowledge of behavior strategies for Deaf students with additional needs preferred.
- A Master's Degree in the Education of Deaf students, Education of Deaf students with additional disabilities, Curriculum and Instruction, Applied Behavior Analysis, School Counseling or related field preferred.
- MSDE certification/licensure in Administration preferred.
