The Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services (DPSCS)
is seeking dedicated candidates to fill important roles within our department.

POSITION DUTIES
This is a Special Appointment position that serves at the pleasure of the Appointing Authority.
This position is responsible for presenting classroom and practical
training exercises in defensive tactics and physical fitness curriculum.
Job duties include but are not limited to:
- Assist with recruit level, specialized course and in-service Defensive Tactics and Physical Fitness Instructional programs.
- Research, update and develop physical training programs.
- Coordinate and assist the academy recruits with various lessons of instructions.
- Communicate with the Physical Training Center Coordinator to ensure defensive tactics and physical training programs are being conducted in a manner conducive to our training venues and meeting mandated requirements.
- Assist in the collection of physical training data in determining program effectiveness.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants must meet all minimum (and selective) qualifications to be considered, and to appear on the list of people eligible for hire. Please read all requirements before applying.
Education: Possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
Experience: Three (3) years' experience in administrative or professional work.
Notes:
- Candidates may substitute additional experience in administrative staff or professional work on a year-for -year basis for the required education.
- Candidates may substitute additional graduate level education at an accredited college or university at the rate of thirty (30) semester credit hours for each year of the required experience.
- Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer involving staff work that included the regular use of independent judgement and analysis in applying and interpreting complex administrative plans, policies, rules or regulations or analysis of operational programs or procedures with recommendations for improvement on a year-for-year basis for the required education and experience.
SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants must meet the selective qualifications to be considered. Include clear and specific information on your application regarding your qualifications.
- A minimum of two (2) years of criminal justice related defensive tactics skills experience within the past five (5) years.
- Applicant must hold a valid MPCTC Academic Instructor Certification and Defensive Tactics Instructor Certification under COMAR 12.04.06 or 12.10.06 OR be able to achieve such certification within six months of beginning employment.
- Applicant must hold a valid recognized personal trainer certification OR be able to achieve such certification within six months of beginning employment.
- Applicant must hold a valid Pool Operator certification OR be able to achieve such certification within six months of beginning employment.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Preference will be given to applicants who possess the following preferred qualifications. Include clear and specific information on your application regarding your qualifications.
- Experience instructing police training courses.
- Experience creating training materials for class instruction.
- Experience in public speaking.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

- Personal Leave - new State employees are awarded six (6) personal days annually (prorated based on start date)
