Introduction
The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) invites eligible candidates to apply for an internship with the Human Resource Services – Bilingual Facilitation Division.
The Human Resource Services – Bilingual Facilitation Division serves internal and external DNR customers by assisting in communication efforts across various platforms. Members of this team facilitate conversations, meetings, workshops and/or training sessions by translating and interpreting information accurately and efficiently between two or more languages.
The Bilingual Facilitation Team plays a crucial role in ensuring effective communication and accessibility between the agency and the diverse populations it serves, particularly those with limited proficiency in English. Their collective work supports various programs, services, and public interactions, helping to break down language barriers and ensuring that all individuals, regardless of their primary language, can fully participate in the services DNR offers.

LOCATION OF POSITION
There are currently three (3) vacancies for this internship opportunity:
- Deep Creek Lake State Park, 898 State Park Rd, Swanton, MD 21561 (Garrett County)
- New Germany State Park, 349 Headquarters Ln, Grantsville, MD 21536 (Garrett County)
- Herrington Manor State Park, 222 Herrington Ln, Oakland, MD 21550 (Garrett County)
Main Purpose of Job
The main purpose of this position is to provide translation and interpretation services for the Maryland Park
Service, and its guests.
The internship will run approximately 16 weeks, from mid-May through early September, with the possibility of
extension for the right candidate. The specific start/end dates, hours, and schedule will be determined in
collaboration between the intern, supervisor and the manager of the park they have been assigned to. Since this
position will work primarily outdoors, the needs of the park will fluctuate based on weather and holidays.
Job duties include but are not limited to:
- Assist Contact Station and Concession Attendants by informing Spanish-speaking customers about service charges, park information, and regulations.
- Assist Naturalists by providing Spanish-speaking visitors with information about interpretive and environmental education programs, and identifying the need to translate or update park bulletin boards and educational materials.
- Assist Lifeguards in providing Spanish-speaking visitors with safe, water-based recreation information.
- Provide interpretation services during emergency care situations.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Applicant must be a current college student, undergraduate or graduate level). A GPA of 2.5 or above is required for academic credit.
SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants must read and speak Spanish proficiently. The internship would be contingent on the applicant's successful completion of a bilingual skills assessment.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Customer service experience
- Experience working at or in a Federal, State or County forest/park
- Experience providing translation and/or interpretation services
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle, UTV or golf cart. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland and five points or fewer on their current driving record. Please note, a provisional driver’s license will not be accepted as the restrictions may interfere with the job requirements.
