Introduction

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) invites eligible candidates to apply for a volunteer/unpaid internship with the Maryland Park Service, at Assateague State Park. This opportunity will provide hands-on experience in the Wildlife Management and Park Operations field.

Assateague State Park, 7307 Stephen Decatur Highway, Berlin, MD 21811 (Worcester County)

Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this position is to assist staff in monitoring and managing the island’s wild horses, educating the public on safety around wildlife, and assisting the park with minimal park operations related to horse management.

The internship runs for about 8 weeks from late June through late August. The specific start/end dates, hours, and schedule will be determined in collaboration between the intern and supervisor.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Applicant must be a high school graduate, with interest in natural resource and/or wildlife management. Current college students studying any related field are preferred. A GPA of 2.5 or above is required for academic credit. Valid driver’s license with five points or fewer on your driving record is required.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Interest in wildlife management
  • Knowledge of the park and wildlife present
  • Comfortable driving an ATV-style vehicle
  • Comfortable communicating rules to visitors
  • Flexible schedule
  • Ability to work outside in various weather conditions, on your feet, for long periods of time

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle, UTV or golf cart. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland and five points or fewer on their current driving record. Please note, a provisional driver’s license will not be accepted as the restrictions may interfere with the job requirements.
