Main Purpose of Job

This position will serve as a School Facilities Architect in the Maryland State Department of Education’s(MSDE) Office of School Facilities and perform duties assigned to the Department by regulation. The professional architect will assist in the management of statewide K-12 school facilities programs, including review and approval of complex, multi-year, capital construction projects and facility programs in coordination with local jurisdictions, Maryland Department of General Services (MDGS), and the Interagency Commission on School Construction (IAC).

The School Facilities Architect will also assist with research, development, and publication of guidelines for the planning and design of school facilities. They will provide technical assistance on school planning, design, construction, and maintenance issues for local education agency staff, government officials, professional consultants, local board of education members and staff, members of special taskforces, and the public. On behalf of State Superintended of Schools, State Board of Education, and the Governor, they will address school facility concerns raised by the members of the public and school communities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Architecture.

Experience: Five years of experience as a licensed professional architect in the design of major institutional buildings are required.

1. Candidates may substitute additional experience as defined above directly related to the position at the rate of one year of experience for each year of the required education.
2. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Master’s degree in Architecture from an accredited college or university for one year of the required experience.

  • Possession of a current license as a professional architect in Maryland or a state with comparable requirements is required.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in Educational K-12 facilities planning or design
  • Knowledge of accessibility and building codes and state regulations regarding public facilities.
  • Experience working with public sector entities on projects
  • Skilled at written correspondence and leading meetings
  • Experience developing design guidelines, design studies, educational specifications, or school facility programs

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

  • Qualified candidates must possess a current Professional license in Architecture.
  • Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
