Introduction

The State Archives serves as the central depository for government records of permanent value. Its holdings date from Maryland's founding in 1634, and include colonial and state executive, legislative, and judicial records; county probate, land, and court records; church records; business records; state publications and reports; and special collections of private papers, maps, photographs, and newspapers. The Archives' Summer Internship Program provides opportunities for students interested in computer science, information technology, and related fields to gain valuable experience in the field through hands-on participation in actual development projects that will be used in the day-to-day fulfillment of the Archives’ core functions of preservation and access.

Main Purpose of Job

This position is an educational learning opportunity for Maryland students within a program that has been provided by the Archives for over forty years. The position is a ten week internship for undergraduate college and graduate school students to get hands-on experience and on-the-job training in the field of Information Technology.

POSITION DUTIES

Interns are expected to work 35 hours per week, starting on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, through Tuesday, August 11, 2026. Interns will engage in a variety of IT-related activities, including but not limited to designing websites using HTML or ASP.NET, or designing, developing, testing, implementing and maintaining applications in VB.NET.

Each student receives a staff mentor and works directly alongside professional IT staff members.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

In order to be considered for an internship, must meet one of the following education requirements:

Education:

● A current college student, undergraduate or graduate level

● Recent college graduate within the last year

AND

● Be a current resident of the state of Maryland or an enrolled student in a Maryland school

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Please list all coursework relevant to the Information Technology Majors, including but not limited to:

Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, Game Design, Web and Application Development in the application section titled 'Specialized Training or Classes Relevant to the Job'. Relevant coursework is preferred, but is not required for consideration.

Knowledge of VB.Net, ASP.NET, MS SQL Server, HTML, JavaScript, CSS, and/or Bootstrap is preferred. Any additional programming experience in other languages is also a plus. Please list any and all experience with these in terms of credits earned or project hours worked in the application section titled 'Specialized Training or Classes Relevant to the Job'.
