Introduction

The Maryland Historical Trust (MHT) is seeking to hire a full time permanent Chief of the Office of Research, Survey, and Registration. The Maryland Historical Trust (MHT) is the state agency dedicated to preserving and interpreting the legacy of Maryland’s past. Through research, conservation and education, MHT helps the people of Maryland understand their history and cultural heritage. Part of the Maryland Department of Planning, MHT serves as Maryland’s State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) under the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966. mht.maryland.gov

Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this leadership position is to direct, manage, plan and supervise the activities of the Office of Research, Survey & Registration (ORSR) in the Maryland Historical Trust (MHT), consistent with MDP’s mission, with MHT’s mission of studying, evaluating, protecting and interpreting the state’s historic sites, structures, districts, and cultural traditions, and with National Park Service requirements of a State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO). ORSR is one of the four major operating units of MHT, and is responsible for the identification, documentation, and evaluation of historical and cultural resources in three sub-programs: Architectural Research, Archaeological Research, and Cultural Resource Information Management. The unit includes the National Register of Historic Places, the Maryland Inventory of Historic Properties, and Medusa, Maryland’s online cultural resource information system.

POSITION DUTIES


  • Develops short, middle, and long-range planning goals for ORSR activities, grant programs, and local government projects.
  • Evaluates, plans, and directs ORSR projects in accordance with research, evaluation, and archival needs of other programs within MHT.
  • Evaluates, monitors, and reports program accomplishments. performs personnel and budget planning and oversight. 
  • Consults with and directs ORSR staff members regarding individual issues of policy, precedent, procedure, or law as well as broader programmatic plans and initiatives.
  • Supervises, administers, and directly oversees particularly complex, precedent setting, or sensitive projects.
  • Has overall responsibility for the non-capital grant program.
  • Provides a broad range of assistance to federal, state, and local agencies, non-profit institutions, private industry and the public.
  • Synthesizes research and disseminates to public and professional audiences through lectures, publications and on-line sources.
  • Provides educational outreach to the public through lectures and public speaking; provides professional training to MHT staff and preservation professionals through field instruction, lectures, online or printed material and university-level teaching.
  • Has overall responsibility for the MHT Press program

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

- Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Historic Preservation, Architectural History, History, or closely related field.

 - Meets the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualifications Standards in History and / or Architectural History (https://www.nps.gov/articles/sec-standards-prof-quals.htm). 

 - Six years of professional work experience in historic preservation or public historical agency administration, including any experience in supervision of other employees, program management, application of statutes and regulations, and development of policies and pro

- Experience with the history of Maryland architecture and the analysis of historic building technology
