Main Purpose of Job
This position provides strategic leadership. supervision,
and instructional guidance to district and school-based mathematics coaches
across an assigned region. The position facilitates professional learning and
on-site support to reinforce alignment of coaching practice to MSDE's Office of
Teaching and Learning coaching vision and strategy. The position plays a
critical role in advancing the State's mathematics priorities, including those
outlined in the Maryland PreK-12 Mathematics Policy and the Blueprint for
Maryland’s Future.
This
position is responsible for strengthening the quality, consistency, and
effectiveness of coaching across schools by supporting coaches in assessing the
current state of math instruction, developing coaching plans and goals,
analyzing mathematics instructional and student outcomes data, and implementing
high-quality instructional materials (HQIM). Also the position ensures
coherence across regional mathematics initiatives, co-leads data conversations,
provides ongoing professional learning, and builds system-level capacity that
drives improved math outcomes statewide.
POSITION DUTIES
Reports
to Director of Mathematics and works in close collaboration with MSDE
colleagues, LEA leaders, and external partners to ensure coherence, build
shared ownership, and support improved mathematics outcomes for Maryland’s
students.
- Conducts ongoing professional learning and observations of each assigned mathematics coach and provides timely, actionable feedback to strengthen coaching effectiveness.
- Develops resources, tools, and aligned training materials to ensure statewide coherence in coaching models and expectations.
- Collaborates with Division of Instructional Programs (DIP) and LEA leadership to address regional coaching needs, align professional learning, curriculum implementation, and coaching supports to evidence-based mathematics instructional practices, and align mathematics coaching initiatives with broader instructional improvement efforts.
- Implements alignment of coaching supervision to MSDE's coaching vision and strategy and Maryland's PreK-12 Mathematics Policy.
- Develops training of State Math Coaches to design and facilitate professional learning and school-based coaching.
- Facilitates and contributes to the development of local mathematics instruction implementation infrastructures, including coaching frameworks, instructional walkthrough tools, and continuous improvement cycles.
- Develops, reviews and provides feedback on regional coaching summaries, LEA math plans, data reports, and implementation deliverables.
- Monitors fidelity of instructional materials, mathematics coaching implementation, and state required literacy practices across coached schools.
- Supports the Director of Mathematics in managing key projects, preparing policy guidance, and organizing statewide mathematics events and convenings.
- Maintains internal systems and tools to ensure strategic coordination and accountability.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: A Bachelor’s degree in mathematics, STEM,
education or a related area from an accredited college or university.
Experience: Five (5)
years of experience in mathematics,
or affiliated with mathematics programs in prekindergarten through 12
settings or related areas. One year of this experience must include
supervising and coaching professional education staff in mathematics.
Notes:
- Candidates may substitute the possession of a Master’s degree or the equivalent of 36 credit hours of post-baccalaureate course work in mathematics, STEM, education or a related area for two years of the required experience directly related to the position.
- The required field of education and experience are unique for this posting and are established by MSDE in accordance with Education Article, Section 2-104 of the Annotated Code of Maryland. The specific education and experience qualifications for each position are on record in the Office of Human Resources.
- Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher as a commissioned officer in Education Program classifications or Education Program specialty codes in the Education field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education, one year of which must have been in an administrative supervisory or consultative capacity.
SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS
One
year of teaching experience in a Kindergarten through 8th Grade Mathematics
Education Program.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Preference will be given to
applicants who possess the following preferred qualification(s). Please

- Experience with prekindergarten through 12 mathematics and/or STEM programs and curriculum.
- Experience designing and facilitating job-embedded professional learning and coaching aligned to evidence-based math instructional practices.
- Experience in teaching environments that consider trends, regulations, and policies affecting instruction and assessment in mathematics.
- Experience linking Maryland College and Career Ready Standards and Frameworks for Mathematics and Knowledge of college and career readiness pathways, standards, trends, regulations, policies, and issues related to mathematics and STEM fields of study.
- Experience implementing, monitoring, and evaluating, and providing high quality and service level-based support and technical assistance for education programs.
- Experience collaborating with diverse communities and organizations for the purpose of implementing programs and strategies and developing and delivering research based and best-in-class professional development programs.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Applicants
must consent to State and FBI (CJIS) background check as a routine procedure
for all employees.
This
position requires travel throughout the State of Maryland and throughout
designated Counties to support teachers within individual school(s) and oversee
the effective implementation of Mathematics initiatives.
