Main Purpose of Job

POSITION DUTIES

The Health Services Specialist provides consultation, advice and technical assistance in the development and implementation of school health services and school-based teen pregnancy prevention in accordance with state and federal laws and regulations. The Specialist shares responsibility for providing consultation, advice and technical assistance in coordinated student services programs and HIV prevention, and uses knowledge and experience in school nursing, public health, and school improvement to support the achievement of department, division, and branch goals while ensuring the provision of safe and healthy learning environments for all students.

Responsibilities include:

  • Directs, consults, trains, and advises local education agency and local health department personnel with respect to school health services programs, coordinated student services program development, teen pregnancy prevention programming, and interdisciplinary initiatives.
  • Provides technical assistance in the area of HIV prevention education.
  • Coordinates HIV prevention activities and trainings.
  • Interprets and applies legislation and policy related to school health services, communicable diseases, health care financing, nursing practices, and other related areas.
  • Participates in and supports various initiatives and project committees, including Take 15 for the Health of It, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Coalition, Maryland Coalition to Prevent Skin Cancer, Maryland Asthma Coalition, among others.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   A Master’s degree or the equivalent of 36 credit hours of post-baccalaureate course work from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Five years of administrative or teaching experience in, or affiliated with, school nursing, school health services or the provision of health services within an educational or related institution.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute two additional years of experience directly related to the position option for the required education.

2. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Doctorate degree at an accredited college or university in a field related to the position for one year of the required experience.

3. The required field of education and experience are unique for each option and are established by MSDE in accordance with Education Article, Section 2-104 of the Annotated Code of Maryland. The specific education and experience qualifications for each position are on record in the Human Resources Branch.

4. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Education Program classifications or Education Program specialty codes in the Education field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to applicants who possess the following preferred qualification(s). Include clear and specific information on your application regarding your qualifications.

 

  • Experience working as an RN school nurse within a K-12 education setting.
  • Experience with coordinating, supporting or managing teen pregnancy prevention programs.
  • Experience with coordinating, supporting or managing HIV/AIDS prevention programs.
  • Experience planning or administering training or professional development opportunities.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
