Introduction
The Maryland State Retirement Agency is the administrator of the Maryland State Retirement and Pension System (“System”). The System is a defined benefit retirement system covering State and local government employees of Maryland. It’s composed of twelve (12) separate retirement and pension systems with over 50 different rule sets. The System has over 433,000 participants (customers), including 210,000 members who are actively employed and participating in the System, 179,000 payees who receive a monthly payment from the System, and 44,000 vested members who are no longer actively employed but have earned a benefit that will become payable at a future date.

This position is designated as hybrid telework eligible under the State of Maryland’s Telework Policy, after successfully completing the defined required training period.
This is a Special Appointment position and serves at the pleasure of the Appointing Authority.

Main Purpose of Job
POSITION DUTIES
The Senior Investment Analyst II’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Interacting with potential and existing managers to discuss performance, attribution, firm changes, outlook, etc.
- Monitoring and overseeing managers through participation in update calls, advisory board meetings, and annual general meetings.
- Participating in industry groups and with other state pension funds to continue to develop best practices in manager evaluation and investment analysis.
- Determining whether prospective strategies exhibit risk and return characteristics that meet portfolio objectives while utilizing qualitative and quantitative analysis to support investment ideas and recommendations.
- Data management, reporting, and process improvement.
- Investigating and completing market analysis and research projects to develop knowledge and experience in multiple asset classes.
- Organizing and maintaining data and reports in the System's client relationship management platform.
- Researching trends and relationships between asset classes to develop historical perspective.
- Assisting in the efficient operation of the division by working on special projects as needed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
Experience: Three years of experience in business or finance with an analytical focus or other relevant experience.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Preference will be given to applicants who possess the following preferred qualification(s). Include clear and specific information on your application regarding your qualifications.
- Knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures of investment management, knowledge of appropriate safeguards and risk mitigants in an investment program, and knowledge of one or more private investment asset classes.
- Five years of experience performing investment research and providing investment analysis/recommendations.
- Knowledge of both public and private credit markets.
- Institutional investment experience, particularly in performing due diligence on private credit strategies
- Experience sourcing and underwriting opportunities to invest with emerging and diverse investment managers.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficiency with MS Excel for modeling and analysis.
- Ability to work independently and appropriately prioritize tasks.
- CFA/CAIA or desire to work towards certification.
