POSITION DUTIES
The Comptroller of Maryland’s Compliance Division is seeking two (2) Business Tax Audit Managers: one to lead the Corporate Income Tax and Digital Advertising Gross Revenues audit team, and another to oversee the Motor Fuel Tax, International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) and Alcohol and Tobacco Tax audit teams.
Corporate Income Tax and Digital Advertising:
This position performs managerial tax auditing work specific to Corporate Income and Digital Advertising Gross Revenues Taxes, oversees and manages the work of a team of Financial Compliance Auditors, and provides direct supervision to the audit team’s supervisor. The work involves providing direction and guidance to internal and external stakeholders on various and complex tax laws, rules and regulations; observing office and audit program administrative activities to ensure compliance with state tax laws, administrative rules and regulations; and assisting the Chief and Assistant Chief Auditors in establishing office and audit program goals and objectives.
Motor Fuel Tax, International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA), and Alcohol and Tobacco Tax:
This position oversees managerial tax auditing functions related to Motor Fuel Tax, the International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA), and Alcohol and Tobacco Taxes. It directs and manages teams of Financial Compliance Auditors and provides direct supervision to the audit team supervisors. Responsibilities include offering guidance to internal and external stakeholders on complex tax laws, regulations, and procedures; monitoring office and audit program activities to ensure adherence to state tax laws and administrative requirements; and assisting the Chief and Assistant Chief Auditors in developing program goals and objectives.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Bachelors Degree in Accounting or Degree in Business with a minimum of 30 Credit hours in accounting and auditing related courses.
Experience: Six years of administrative staff or professional work.
Notes:
- Candidates may substitute 30 credit hours in business related courses from an accredited college or university for each year up to four years of the required experience.
- Candidates may substitute the possession of a business related Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and two years of experience in administrative staff or professional work for the required experience.
- Candidates may substitute the possession of a business related Master's degree from an accredited college or university for five years of the required experience.
- Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer involving staff work related to the administration of rules, regulations, policy, procedures and processes, or overseeing or coordinating unit operations or functioning as a staff assistant to a higher ranking commissioned officer on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Preferred Qualifications for Corporate Income Tax and Digital Advertising Tax Audit Manager:
• Professional experience performing corporate income tax audits for a state or federal department of revenue.
• Professional experience preparing corporate income tax returns.
Preferred Qualifications for Motor Fuel Tax, International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA), and Alcohol and Tobacco Tax Audit Manager:
• Professional experience performing motor fuel tax audits for a state or federal department of revenue.
• Professional experience performing International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) tax audits for a state department of revenue.
• Professional experience performing alcohol or tobacco tax audits for a state or federal department of
revenue.
Preferred Qualifications for both Business Tax Audit Manager Positions:
• Professional experience performing financial compliance audits.
• Professional experience with and knowledge of state and federal tax laws, rules, and regulations.
• Familiarity with generally accepted auditing standards.
• Familiarity with generally accepted accounting principles.
• Certification as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), Certified Management Accountant (CMA), or Certified Government Auditing Professional (CGAP).
• Knowledge of accounting and auditing methods and systems and legal, business, and accounting
terminology.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
• Experience with tax related or other high volume data system
