POSITION DUTIES

The Police Officer Supervisor at the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services (DPSCS) is the supervisory level of law enforcement work at a State facility. Employees in this classification supervise lower-level Police Officers and other security personnel. They supervise Law enforcement work enforcing laws, rules, and regulations governing the safety and protection of personnel and State property. Employees may be assigned to day, evening, night or rotating shifts which may include holidays and weekends. May also be subject to call-in and overtime based on staffing needs.

  • Provide supervision for information and assistance to the public professionally and courteously.
  • Maintains a professional appearance and demeanor at all times.
  • Ensures all staff attends required trainings and maintains all necessary law enforcement certifications.
  • Manage POII and Security Attendant schedules and ensure ample coverage is provided for assigned locations/buildings
  • Ensure the correct Enforcement of all applicable federal, state, and local laws, as well as departmental policies and procedures.
  • Direct, Patrol and monitor assigned DPSCS facilities to deter crime, maintain order, and ensure the safety of personnel and visitors.
  • Respond to security alarms, incidents, and disturbances within assigned buildings, taking appropriate law enforcement action as necessary. Prepare detailed and accurate incident reports.
  • Provide security escorts for personnel or sensitive materials as required.
  • Communicate with the Watch Center, ID Detectives and other law enforcement officers
  • Make arrests when necessary and follow proper procedures for the custody and processing of individuals.
  • Performs safety, patrol and security duties in motor vehicles or on foot
  • May testify in court in connection with arrests made while on duty
  • Performs other related duties.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   Graduation from an accredited high school or high school equivalency certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education as described in the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission regulation.

Experience: Three years of experience as a certified law enforcement officer.

Notes: 

1. The above educational requirement is set by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission in accordance with Public Safety Article, Section 3-207, Annotated Code of Maryland.

2. Candidates may substitute the possession of an Associate of Arts degree from an accredited college or university in law enforcement, criminology or related social sciences for one year of the required experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher as a non-commissioned officer in Protective Service classifications or Law Enforcement specialty codes in the Military Police Officer field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.    

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

  •  One (1) year experience supervising certified Law Enforcement Officers.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 5 yr. or more of experience supervising certified law enforcement officers
  • 3-4 yr of experience supervising certified law enforcement officers

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Candidates for positions in this classification must possess a Police Officer certification as required by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission at the time of application.

2. Applicants for this classification, formerly certified by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission as a Police Officer within the past three years and are eligible for recertification at the time of appointment, meet the certification requirement for this classification.  The recertification criteria are listed in the Code of Maryland Regulations 12.04.01.07, available at the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission.

3. Employees in this classification may be required to possess or obtain a special police commission in accordance with Public Safety Article, Section 3-209, Annotated Code of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Selection standards for Police Officer certification are established by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission in accordance with Public Safety Article, Section 3-207, Annotated Code of Maryland.  These selection criteria are listed in detail in the Code of Maryland Regulations 12.04.01.04 and include the following:

U.S. Citizenship

Must be at least 21 years of age

Satisfactory background investigation, including a check of criminal history

Oral interview

Physical examination

Possession of a driver's license valid in the State of Maryland.

2. Employees in this classification are subject to call-in and, therefore, will be required to provide the facility with a phone number or where they can be reached.

3. Employees in this classification may be required to bear firearms and to demonstrate practical knowledge and proficiency in the safe use and care of firearms on a periodic basis, as required by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission.

4. Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.

  • Personal Leave - new State employees are awarded six (6) personnel days annually (prorated based on start date)
  • Annual Leave - ten (10) days of accumulated annual leave per year
  • Sick Leave - fifteen (15) days of accumulated sick leave per year 
  • Parental Leave - up to sixty (60) days of paid parental leave upon the birth or adoption of a child
