The Maryland Department of Juvenile Services (DJS) is dedicated to transforming young lives, creating safer communities, and fostering equitable systems. We are seeking passionate individuals for the role of Building Security Officer Trainee, so come join our team and make a meaningful impact on youth and the community at DJS! 

The main purpose is to protect the safety and security of persons and state property in the Baltimore City Juvenile Justice Center (BCJJC). 

Duties of this position include, but are not limited to:  

• Learn how to operate Metal Detectors/Scanners and other surveillance equipment supplied by the Department, and conduct searches as defined by the Department. Scan all incoming persons with a metal detector; inspect all purses, bags, boxes, packages, and parcels.  

• Become familiar with the Entrance and Exit logs, permitting only authorized persons to enter the premises. Prevent unauthorized entry or access to BCJJC; Monitor deliveries at the loading dock area.  

• Learn and utilize software to control vehicular sally-port, entry and exit lift-gates, and pedestrian gates. Control access for all employees, building tenants, vendors, and contractors. Utilize the camera system to monitor access, prohibited entry, and activity.  

• Learn how to provide assistance to individuals looking for agencies or services. Answer general questions via telephone at locations where a receptionist may not be available or provided. Observe activities of individuals in the building to ensure that building rules and policies are being observed by requesting compliance.  

• Monitor youth, parents, employees, court personnel, and pedestrian traffic inside the building and around the perimeter of the building. Daily roving of the entire inner and outer perimeter of the building to complete safety and security checks as well as property and structural damage. Participate in scheduled fire drills, disaster control drills, and emergency evacuations. 

Employees in this classification are subject to a 24-hour schedule. As such, the incumbent will be required to work:  
  • One of three daily shifts scheduled around the clock   
  • Days off during the week, weekends, or a combination of both   
  • Holidays   
  • Mandatory overtime

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Ability to read and write.

Experience: None.

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must meet the minimum and selective qualifications to be considered. Include clear and specific information on your application regarding your qualifications.

Candidates must possess a High School Diploma or GED. Please attach a copy of your certificate to your application.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Six months of experience observing and reporting any incident that may result in loss or damage to property or equipment, or endanger the safety of employees, residents, and visitors.

Six months of experience guarding buildings, grounds, and parking areas.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of an automobile. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Employees in this classification are subject to call 24 hours a day and, therefore, will be required to provide the employer with a telephone number where they can be reached.

Employees in this classification are subject to a 24-hour schedule. As such, the incumbent will be required to work:

The assessment will involve a rating of your application based on your education, training, and/or experience as it relates to the position's requirements. For education obtained outside the U.S., you will be required to provide proof of equivalent American education, as determined by a Foreign Credential Evaluation Service, at the time of hire.
